Dougherty is an interesting choice. He's certainly had a great deal of success in smaller-budget (by comparison to big blockbusters) stuff, but this will be his first real foray into large budget, large scale blockbuster fare.
The good news is he's writing as well. Edwards did his best on the 2014 film, but the movie was flawed at a script level, having been worked on by multiple people and multiple rewrites and multiple changes in scope and tone. Don't get me wrong, I actually really like the 2014 film, but I'm just saying, there's definitely opportunity for improvement and giving the movie over to one person on both a writing and directing front gives the movie the best chance to improve on its predecessor.
