GODZILLA: King of the Monsters (5-31-19 -NO SPOILERS PLEASE)

Ok guys here's my opinion of the new trailer...

So first off lets get to the parts that excite me the most. First off this movie seems to be leaning toward more of an adventure/mythology type of movie (like the Clash of the Titans...no pun intended). From the looks of it and I am just speculating here, the "Titans" seem to represent the idea of balance...similar to the 2014 Godzilla. My take on it is that Mothra is the embodiment of Light/Life (her scenes have a water element to them representing life, Rodan looks to be more in the line of Chaos/Wind showing he is a destructive force but air is a necessity of the earth, King Ghidorah is the presentation of Darkness, making storm clouds for instance, however he may not necessarily be Evil in the traditional sense but more of the aspect that you can't have light without darkness, and Godzilla I think will be viewed as the ultimate wild card of this balance, who he chooses to side with; that side will win. I am also very interested in this undersea ancient ruins, to me it seems like ancient people worshiped Godzilla and the other Titans, very similar to the people on Skull Island, and through out time as the Titans began their long slumber people forgot about them.

The visual effects look great even this early in the stage, I love how Godzilla's dorsal fins look more like the original design (from reading the Art of Godzilla, Gareth Edwards and the production team felt that his Dorsal Fins would chip away and become jagged, which never really sat well with me) Mothra looks great from what we did see of her, Rodan was a big surprise with me, I was really worried about how they would do his design but seeing him, it really looks like they took his original 1950s design and just gave it a slight update, really cool! King Ghidorah...well looks darn impressive for the brief period we see him, and I am interested to see how his three heads each have a personality.

Ok I did tear up a bit, I won't lie, this has been a childhood dream seeing not just Godzilla but other Toho monsters being brought to life by a big budget Hollywood studio. Mothra's wings unfolding, Rodan coming out of a volcano, Godzilla raising from the sea...It's like Classic Toho, only updated. One thing I have noticed and I am very pleased is seeing youtubers' reaction to this trailer, from longtime Godzilla fans, to people who have no idea what these movies are, it's AMAZING!!! I saw one reaction where it was three kids, that the young girl was in awe at Mothra unfolding her wings, saying "Look a butterfly!" I want to see this new generation be in awe and amazement like I was when I saw these larger than life Monsters when I was little. The reaction to Mothra seems to be the highlight of the reactions, both men and women and children of all ages, got hooked on that scene alone. The music...OMG the music in the trailer really elevated this trailer beyond just a typical monster movie, and made it seem majestic and awe inspiring at the same time (kudos to the team that put the trailer together!!). So yes I count myself in on the hype, yes we as fans, can become disheartened, and over critical, but for me seeing these younger people react to a franchise that at one point was a dead end, was something truly magical...from a man who recently found out he might not be able to have children of his own. In closing...lets just relax, and let loose a bit, and go to this movie, remembering a time when we were young and were "wowed" by the sight of a giant radioactive dinosaur fighting monsters and stomping on cities. There's some Mesopotamian iconography in the Rodan imagery. The Pazuzu statue in that shot of the volcanic ruins is probably just a sight gag, but if you look carefully at the first image on Rodan's Monarch Sciences profile, you can see two off to either side of the central icon. That's odd considering Rodan is holed up off the coast of Mexico. The apkallu are probably sight gags as well (or a case of bad research), but I can't help but wonder: are the filmmakers drawing from the Mesopotamian well for another reason?

Probably not, but I'm open to reasonable interpretations.

I guess those ruins must be inside Rodan's volcano, right? And they're accessed by some sort of underwater passageway, since we see Serizawa in a sub inspecting the underwater ruins of some ancient civilization earlier in the trailer and that looks to be him climbing those steps in a couple of other shots.

I wonder if he's deliberately setting off some sort of explosive to wake Rodan (post-Ghidorah awakening, if that's the case) or if that explosion is from something else.

I've watched the trailer a dozen times, and am reminded of how in the mid-'90s Shusuke Kaneko decided that since we now know kaiju are so scientifically implausible they need a mythic undercurrent to back them up.

Mothra, Rodan, and Godzilla all seem to have ancient temples. The fact that one's under water and another is inside a volcano just sell the 'out there' feel a Godzilla movie should have. Really happy with this choice to highlight something that was always there and make it a prominent part of the lore.

It’s not the ONLY defining feature of the franchise, but it’s basically ALWAYS been there and is emphasized to one extent or another differently over the years.

Well, I can hardly wait to see some more declassified Monarch locations.

About Ifukube's themes turning up in the new score, I'm okay with it. On the one hand, we've heard his music in almost two-thirds of the movies up to this point, so it's all familiar territory for us. But for as much as I'd like to hear a great, entirely original score, it could be interesting to hear the old themes integrated into a new, Western score.

There is no doubt there will be more monsters than just the four. Michael Dougherty has admitted to as much. Of course, everyone has now gone speculation crazy (myself included) about what monsters we will see.

While many want more Toho creations in this film, the only ones I could see making it are those giant insects (Meganulon), since we are going back to the volcano thing with Rodan. Of course, WB could easily replace those critters with giant scorpions (harking back to their own "The Black Scorpion", which of course, also came out of a volcano and took place in Mexico). Awe, the speculation game.

ok, so this just occurred to me, because yesterday I heard BOC "Godzilla" on the radio, and was shocked. I've basically listened to the same *modern rock* station for my entire tenure in Sacramento They play everything from as far back as the 1960's, but 80% is modern stuff. *Godzilla* enjoyed a brief return to play in the mid-90's, but I probably haven't heard it anywhere, even on an oldies station, in nearly 20 years -- I was thinking, this might be fun to include in the film, maybe in the end credits, similar to how the first Iron Man ended breaking into Black Sabbath Iron Man.

When I first heard about Rodan slumbering in, taking energy from, and eventually rising out of an active volcano... well, I got to wondering if the director or writers or someone else on the crew might not be a closet Hanna-Barbera Godzilla fan. I mean we're basically getting this:

and the new Rodan design honestly doesn't look too far removed from this fan re-imagining of HB's Firebird:


It's kinda cool, in a double secret geek sort of way.

I wouldn't be surprised. It's obvious the people involved are huge fans of the franchise. They will draw inspiration wherever they can.
