Wonder what location(s) they will mess up next time? And I would not mind seeing monster battles in more rural areas, like we had in the 1960s Showa features.

What I am about to say will get flack.

I would rather have Bagan as the villain with China and Korea as the backdrop. Since Dr. Serizawa, I would to see a Steven Martin character returner doing a Jack McGee/Carl Kolchak type reporting. Then again I would like to see King Ghidorah being a threat to the world. I hope the sequel is a 2 and half or a 3 hour long movie.

It's hard for me to focus on anything else except which monsters I'd want in the next film.

KG seems like the perfect choice to me.

Rodan, Anguirus, or even Mothra would work well.

I also wouldn't be opposed to a new monster. The MUTOS were very well animated and had personality so any reservations I had about new monsters were thrown out the window when I saw the first movie.

I'd be curious if they bring back our scientist leads. I think its safe to say that we won't be further exploring the adventures of the Brody family.

In the Deadline.com article, Edwards pretty much said he'd rely on the same formula of a human-focused narrative. Though with Godzilla already being a thing, I imagine we will see more of him.

I imagine whatever the monster is for the sequel, the roles will be reversed: Godzilla will be seen and interacted with early on, and the hide-and-seek, suspenseful monster build will be for the new enemy monster he faces.

I want to see Serizawa suffer an accident, maybe during a Godzilla attack, and have to put on... the eye patch.

I want more Sally Hawkins and Watanabe and David Strathairn in general.

I'd rather not have Mothra so soon, especially since I'd want her to remain at least somewhat mystical, and that might be a lot to introduce into what 2014 already set up. But if she did return, I'd want to see a different, varied type of kaiju (or a completely original one) come with her. Like Anguirus. Also, Anguirus in general. That's who I want to come back the most.

Anguirus.

But really, if they already have rights to five monsters, what are some of the most likely ones that they've purchased? Mothra and King Ghidorah most definitely. Rodan maybe. Anguirus on a star's wish but who knows? Anything beyond that is pretty much a guess.

Five monsters, hmm....

I want to see them remake the Golden Age films minus Monster Zero (because humanoid aliens probably wont fly these days) and King Kong (cause rights).

Remake Mothra vs. Godzilla, giving us Mothra.

Remake Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster, giving us Rodan and King Ghidorah.

Remake Destroy all Monster, giving us Anguirus, Varan, Baragon etc.

If they continue down the path, I would love to see Mechagodzilla enter the fold.

I'd love for the film to start out in the middle of Godzilla fighting another kaiju.

Dat'd be coo'.

So...am I the only person that is wary of bringing in Mothra?

The knee-jerk reaction, even for me, was "I wanna see Mothra. She'd more or less work in this series." The more I think about it, though, the more I begin to wonder and start to think that it'd be somewhat problematic to bring in Mothra.

Mothra is often depicted as a force of nature attempting to restore balance to that which man throws out of order, whether she's fighting the human-created Godzilla, or defending the Earth from an alien invader, she's ALWAYS been aligned with the forces of good.
Mothra vs. Godzilla, given the Godzilla we got in this movie.......that wouldn't work. Godzilla's the good guy. For Mothra to come into this series, we would need her and Godzilla to team up against something worse...yeah, that could mean King Ghidorah and all, but I don't think we'll ever see Mothra vs. Godzilla with the way this thing has already started out.

Personally, I'd go the following route, in some fashion or another:
Godzilla 2:
-Bring in a Katagiri-like character: someone, whether he's DIRECTLY associated with/in charge of a military force or just closely affiliated (ie, an arms manufacturer or something) who looks at the destruction from the first film, and wants to kill Godzilla.
-Have Godzilla attack, but somehow show maybe a little later down the line, that he only attacked because this douchey human character attacked him first and provoked him.
-Bring in Anguirus, and depict him as essentially the bad guy (send him back to his roots from GRA), and have Godzilla fight him off but not kill him.

Godzilla 3
-Anguirus reappears, injured but pissed off, destroying a city. King Ghidorah appears and finishes him off...now, Godzilla (and here's where you can also introduce Mothra, as an Earth-defender to team up with Godzilla) must fight off Ghidorah

Godzilla 4
-After Godzilla's done fighting off (but maybe not killing, but there's a solution to that) Ghidorah, aliens appear...and they are pissed that Godzilla managed to foil their plans. In order to try again, they're bringing a pal for King Ghidorah...Gigan...I'd honestly prefer if NEITHER of these was in cyborg form....

Godzilla 5
-Mecha-King Ghidorah, Gigan (cyborg), and Mechagodzilla lead a charge against the Earth led by the aliens

Now, there's a lot of elements at play there, and maybe it'd be difficult to make it all work COHESIVELY, but it's sort of an idea that I like for a few reasons
1 - I'm sick to death of EVERYTHING being "intended" to be a trilogy and EVERY third film being the one that puts such a final capper on everything that there's no choice but to abandon the series and/or reboot it.
2 - it gives us the Godzilla vs. the military/mankind stuff we wanted to see
3 - it brings in Anguirus and keeps him fairly comfortably in the role we all know: the kaiju punching bag
4 - it brings in King Ghidorah
5 - it keeps Godzilla rooted as the hero
6 - it gives us increasing insanity throughout the run of the films
7 - Mechagodzilla leading King Ghidorah and GIgan into battle...who WOULDN'T want to see that?

Another idea that might actually be pretty cool is if, after two or three films, humanity decides to build Mechagodzilla(s) as an AID to Godzilla...as a sort of Earth defender built in the image of Earth's mightiest defender...and then Godzilla and Mechagodzilla fight together against something. That'd be a really unique and interesting team-up.

I'm just spitballing some ideas. I think with the tone they've established they can go in ANY direction they want but as long as they keep Godzilla as the hero and don't have him turn heel for NO reason, and as long as they give us some classic Toho kaiju, they can do whatever they want INCLUDING also continually creating kaiju. I liked the MUTOs so I'm not against more new kaiju...but I think we'd all like to see some different takes from this creative team on some Toho kaiju as well, to maybe breathe some new life and interest into these secondary kaiju that we all love.

How cool would it be if a whole generation of kids have Anguirus or Rodan or Gigan or something FIRMLY planted in their minds and as their favorite kaiju? That can only be a good thing, right?

I want to see the world explode with kaiju, and most importantly I want the focus to be on the aftermath of kaiju and specifically Godzilla as a protector. (Do what Godzilla vs. Biollante did so well)
I'm sure there are people who don't see him as any differently as the MUTO, but that's why I want it to start with him stopping another kaiju. Delve into what its like to live in a world with giant monsters. Explore the topic.

I don't know how important it is for any specific kaiju to appear, but Ghidorah needs to be saved for a possible 3rd film. He's something you build up to.

I like Monarch...especially if we learn that they are hiding more monsters. It seems like a logical conclusion given the history with Godzilla, maybe even Serizawa doesn't know some of the details regarding Goji and his links to other monsters.

What if, for example, the movie opens up with footage of Godzilla fighting Anguirus (I LOVEEEEEEEEEE the idea of the movie opening with a fight sequence, as mekagojira mentioned). We see it through archived footage which is somehow newly discovered from Monarch. We then learn that Monarch has previously located more monsters (perhaps a nest or something) and conducted nuclear experiments on the baby creatures. Most of the monsters die, but one Rodan survives. Meanwhile, Anguirus shows up near San Fran shortly after the nuke goes off, drawn by the blast and Godzilla's previous battle with muto. Godzilla's long gone, but Ang causes havoc in Cali.

As for where you from here...who knows? Just tossing some ideas out. I really like the idea of Monarch and following where the cover ups trace back...maybe Monarch is far more sinister than we (or Serizawa) knew about. They know monsters exist and cover up when needed, killing off witnesses and stealing footage. We learn that previous incidents, like Janjira, were also monster-related. Monarch starts off with a simple research mission but that morphs into something completely different..think bioweapons or something. I always thought the ANEB idea was one of the best conceived in the Godzilla films...something similar could work hear.

@Jelly The only reason I like the Mothra angle is because I think the male Muto was so well done that I know Mothra could be equally as awesome.

I wouldn't mind seeing some shadiness out of Monarch, since I was initially expecting them to be a more Umbrella Corporation type of thing. Plus, it would give more opportunities for some conflict amongst the human ranks.

I know I'm in the minority but I just don't think King Ghidorah would work, whether or not they've already acquired the rights. I just don't see it.

With all the hints dropped in this one, along with the whole bug thing, I think Mothra is most likely, but man I've had enough of Mothra to last me for a while. And bless her heart she's just not interesting. Now, they could change her around some to make her more interesting, but I don't think the fandom would want that. I just never really got into Mothra all that much... if anything I prefer the larvae crawling around spraying webs as opposed to the full grown Mothra flying around dropping glitter spores.

I'd personally go with Anguirus and/or Rodan.

Or... if I were to fulfill my own personal fantasy, I'd like to see them secure the rights to Gamera and finally do the "versus" movie I've been hoping for...
