I dunno...not one of those movies was very well received, except Annihilation. Yeah, the argument can definitely be made that it got plowed under by Black Panther, but it was the week after. March 22 gives Captain Marvel two weeks to run. Saying Uprising suffered because of Black Panther would be like saying in a few weeks that Solo would have made a trillion dollars if not for Infinity War.

Hm. I don't agree with that take.

Lego Batman, Beauty and the Beast and Kong Skull Island all hit within a month of each other last year and I don't feel like they sucked the air outta the room for anyone else. Granted, they all have different target audiences, but you're not gonna convince me that Black Panther and Wrinkle in Time have the same target demo either...and throw Tomb Raider and Red Sparrow into that pile, along with Uprising...at least ONE of those movies should have been able to hit if they were well-received.

It's hard to look for more examples because it's only VERY recently that Feb/March has become a place where studios put tentpole movies. Even just dipping back to 2015, the biggest movie released in EITHER of those months was Disney's Cinderella...which was a sizable movie budget-wise ($100 million) but it was the ONLY one...2016 had Deadpool and BvS in those two months, but like, 7 weeks apart. It's a new trend, so it's hard to analyze, but comparing against 2017, it seems pretty clear to me that the 2018 slate was just not well-received. Beauty and the Beast was the second-highest grossing movie of 2017, it didn't destroy Kong, or even Baby Driver, which came out a few weeks after that.

The first third of 2017 was a lot more balanced compared to 2018 in terms of market share among the various releases. 2017 had a lot of movies perform at their own peak potential like Split, Get Out, Lego Batman, Fifty Shades Darker, John Wick 2, Logan, Skull Island, Beauty and the Beast, The Boss Baby, and The Fate of the Furious.

At the same time, those hits did collectively draw the most attention while many other would-be event movies floundered. Power Rangers was a one-weekend wonder and Life, Ghost in the Shell, The Great Wall, and A Cure For Wellness all bombed. Even lower-profile releases that were never destined to break big opened with debuts. Free Fire opened in over 1,000 theaters to less than $1 million and that was more than half of its eventual domestic total.

Part of that is a matter of which movies are well-received and which ones aren't. Part of it is also that moviegoers (myself included) are more selective than ever about what they plunk down cash to see in a theater. The days when the prospect of just seeing a movie on the big screen was a draw unto itself have gone the way of the shopping mall. People today only go to the theater if they have a compelling reason.

In 2018, the only March/April releases that really thrived in North America in Black Panther's wake were Ready Player One, A Quiet Place, and Rampage. We'll never know how the other would-be event films released every week in March would have performed if Black Panther hadn't remained the buzzy movie of the moment throughout the month. I do think it's a safe bet that if February 2017 had brought a $200m+ opener that went on to sell $700m in domestic admissions alone, there would not have been nearly as many other movies in early 2017 that performed at their own peak potential. Even Beauty and the Beast wasn't the kind of box office juggernaut that Black Panther turned out to be.

Everything at comic con is posted online now. 2012/2014-ish was sort of the end of the 'keeping things actually secret' era.
A friend of mine went for several straight years and stopped going because of that...he was like "You're spending all this money for the 'exclusivity'...and then it's just posted online"

As for whether we'll get anything....I'm not counting on it. In addition to ComicCon all being posted online now, it feels like not as big of a deal in general. Lots of places don't really bother doing much, if anything, anymore.

I stopped going to TK for a long time because my work computer would block access to it. I had many a good conversation there, but ramping up for the 2014 film, the influx of young people kind of turned me off. I generally am interested in news about physical media releases, and mild conversation about new entries, and of course reminiscing about old times. Generally the fanbase here are more my contemporaries, and a bit more mild mannered, which I appreciate.

About the date change, I think it is actually a wise move. In years past, memorial day was the beginning of the summer Movie seasons, with some huge monster hit movie (no pun intended). Solo was the #1 movie this past weekend, but it fell short of expectation. Looking at what's released around 5/31/19, That is a full 4 weeks out from Avengers 4, and 2 weeks out from John Wick 3, which gives them time to dominate the Box Office. Aladdin is supposed to come out 5/24. But Disney's live action remakes are hit and miss. It could be "meh" like Alice in Wonderland, or Jungle Book, or it could turn out to be a global phenomenon like Beauty & The Beast. Looking at June, things aren't much better, but I feel a year out most of those titles are speculative rather than definite release dates. I think this is about the best move LP could make considering the oversaturated Movie Market as it is.

For what its worth, I still think Solo should have just pushed its release back to December, to be consistent. I know everyone says ..."but Mary Poppins"...but that doesn't seem to be the same demographic as Star Wars, unless there's something I don't know about...

So apparently according to a Reddit user (I take all info as speculative) there was another test screening and it was apparently excellent with great audience reaction.

No need to get into too much since they (thankfully) decided not to be cool and spoil what they saw.

I plan to see trailers and avoid spoilers.

^I read another so-called leak about two days ago (details of the four kaiju - read that - and a plot breakdown of, like, the first half of the movie - didn't read most of that beyond just the intro in case it's true -). The source was supposedly the first draft for the script. There's gonna be a lot of these supposed leaks, some truthful, some half truths, some mostly good guesswork, some mediocre guesswork, and a whole lot of BS before this is all over.

Today is June 8, 2018. Once upon a time this was to be the day that Godzilla 2 opened in theaters. I think it'll end up being worth the wait.


We're getting Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah together in a Hollywood production. This might not ever happen again.
