Monster Zero x SciFi Japan - Archive Only

With the new movie only a short month away, I think now is the time to ask: "What's Next?" Not necessarily for Godzilla, since I think there's been plenty of discussion and speculation on where the series will go after this movie, but I mean for the Genre has a whole. If this movie is as successful as we all hope and forecasts predict it will be, then how will the rest of the industry react? Unlike King Kong in 2005 or Pacific Rim last year, if Godzilla turns out to be an indisputable success then I can't help but wonder whether or not it will spur a revival of Giant Monster films.

We've already seen shades of this with the news that Kadokawa plans to revive Gamera for his 50th Anniversary. Will we see other companies try to cash in with revivals of other '50s/'60s monsters or try to create new ones?

It would be nice to see a Rodan reboot

I'd love to see more original stuff akin to Cloverfield and Pacific Rim.

I wonder...I mean, last time there was an American Godzilla film, other countries certainly tried to cash-in on their own famous monsters and released remakes or reboots or sequels of their older films, but I wonder if the world has changed so much that it won't happen this time around.

If Godzilla goes over 700 million, then I think we will see some kind of revival. Probably via cheapy SyFy Original Movie tier productions.

It's possible that if Godzilla 2014 were more successful, the other studios would have created their own giant monster.

Who would've thought when this thread began in 2014 that a couple of years later Hollywood's next original kaiju would be Anne Hathaway?

someone should grab the rights to gamera.

You know, if the MonsterVerse keeps on being more successful one movie after another, chances are someone will get the rights to Gamera to cash in on the giant monster success. If Kong Skull Island's success is any indication, I think this has a very good chance of happening. My wish is for Legendary to grab the rights to Gamera and make him part of the MonsterVerse. He could be Godzilla's doppelganger, another alpha predator who shows up to bring balance to the planet. Man, this would be an awesome matchup! Godzilla Vs Gamera by Legendary pictures!!

Nobody cares about Gamera. Nobody is going to fund a +$100 million Gamera movie. Nobody even wants to fund a $15m Gamera film. Give it up, people.

Anyways, these monster movies are doing very well overseas. Wouldn't surprise me if they incorporate some type of spin-off potential for Mothra.

Well I don't know, I never say never. I like to think that if the MonsterVerse movies continue being hits then Legendary will be looking at more monsters beyond Godzilla and Kong. Those monsters may be original creations or existing ones such as Gamera. Gamera may not get his own MonsterVerse film, but who is to say that he won't make an appearance in a future Godzilla or Kong movie. If it makes money, then there's always the possibility.

I remember a number of people on this forum say over the years that there will never be another American Godzilla movie, there will never be another Toho Godzilla movie, there will never be a Godzilla Vs Kong, etc. etc. etc. Well guess what happened?

Never say never at this point, but I kinda think a Godzilla vs. Gamera film makes more sense as a Japanese production, co-produced by Toho and Kadokawa.

Now, I could totally see Legendary raiding Toho's rogues gallery for more monsters.

^Honestly, I think they've probably already talked with Toho about it. With this talk of writers rooms and continuing past vs. Kong I imagine they've been brainstorming both original creatures and returning classic monsters as tentative movie ideas.

Way back when I first posted this, I was hoping the answer to my question would be "Hollywood and Tokyo start producing brand new Monster movies" and, for the most part, I think that's what's happened. ^_^ Or, at the very least, they've opted for a mix of "NEW New" (Colossal, Love & Peace) and Adaptations of other material into new films (Attack on Titan, Rampage) moreso than the revivals. Even better, I'm just glad that I was right that G'14 ultimately spurred a revival of the genre as a whole!

Now that we know Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidora will appear, I was thinking some other earlier more grounded kaiju on certain islands would be cool, even if they are smaller in size -Varan, Gorosaurus, Manda, Ebirah, Kamacuras and Kumonga would be cool, also the trio from Space Amoeba, hack even the giant Octopus, and Giant Condor. Although they were not named, perhaps in Kong Skull island we already got Kumonga & The Giant Octopus .

Buying the US rights to Gamers would be a waste,since you may as well just make up your own original monster. General audiences aren't going to even know its a remake.

someone doing a co-production for a Gamera movie would be neat to see.

If there was a revival to be made, I'd suspect it's of an American monster. The Rhedosaurus, for example. However, I don't see that as a real possibility. They could surely revisit the 50's Big Bug films with ease, and tie them into the Monsterverse. In Kong they already alluded to the giant ants from Them!. A colony of those bad boys swamps a cargo ship and lands in LA, mayhem ensues... profit.

It would be kind of odd (but cool) if Godzilla and Gamera are first in the same film from a Hollywood production...

perhaps someone could work some Vodou and get Ultraman.
