What if they Borrowed Marvel's Model?

I love the way Marvel studios handled the Avengers films. Set up all the heroes in their individual films and then do the big payoff with the Avengers film where they all crossover. It is a great model that has obviously worked out very well for them.

But it got me thinking...what if this Godzilla movie is a hit and they do something similar with this as a series?

Like lets say after this, they do a Godzilla sequel, a US modern version of Rodan (I would love that one), a new version of Mothra, A War of the Gargantuas remake (I would kill for that). Each film can be of a different approach. Godzilla is obviously the nuclear metaphor and more grounded in realism. Mothra can be like Thor was which is the more other worldly fantasy film. And in each film they could introduce other supporting monsters along the way like King Ghidorah, Baragon, Manda, and the like.

And then BOOM, Destroy All Monsters movie where they all crossover. How awesome would that be? A pipe dream, I know, but it is fun to imagine.

I think it would fall apart pretty quickly.

I mean, technically the Marvel Model already happened.
Universal's Monster films did it.
Toho did it.

I just don't think it'd work today.

With the way franchises are going nowadays, it really depends. Most films are costing arms and legs to make. It's an obvious reason why so many people amongst the industry say that the end for it is near. For that to even be considered possible, it really depends on how well this movie does and if a sequel is made, how well that one does.

In addition to the comments already made in this thread: There's really no monsters in the Godzilla franchise that would stand well on their own. Sure Mothra, Rodan, Mogera, etc. all had their own films, but these days they are simple seen as Godzilla monsters.

I don't see Legendary making an $100m+ film about Mothra.

Yeah, no. She might show up in some form in a Godzilla sequel, but I could not even begin to fathom a big-budget Mothra-only film or any other solo Toho monster movie for that matter.

Haha, I think this thread became way more pessimistic than Irish Gfan probably intended. After all I think most of us would agree the likelihood of Marvel-esque Godzilla universe coming to fruition is a pipe-dream. But none the less, it would be interesting to imagine. I would love to see a modern take on a Rodan-only story that is much more horror-oriented like the original (i.e. the attack on the village by the Meganulon).

Not to mention a slew of others that ultimately converged with Destroy All Monsters. Marvel was not the first to do this.

I think a remake of Mothra ('60) could be terrific, as it's a very strong story - but I don't see it happening because people are stupid and don't understand how cool Mothra is (poor, ignorant folk).

Mothra and Gojira are the two best films Honda made, the best of the entire kaiju genre.

I'm all for Mothra appearing in a new Godzilla film, so long as they go back the original incarnation the character who's not a plush toy plot-device with dress-up doll Shobijin.

As cool as it would be I don't think American audiences would go see movies about giant insects or a giant prehistoric pterodactyl. The past two american monster movies haven't been very profitable (Cloverfield and Pacific Rim) which doesn't bode well for Godzilla.
