What if they Borrowed Marvel's Model?

It's been more than 15 years since the Emmerich Godzilla. I think movie goers have largely moved on, especially the kids who saw it first because by now they are adults.

I mean, if it was 1996 and someone was worried about rebooting franchise which last movie was in 1980, I don't think there would be much concern. The internet just makes things fresh in people's minds.

The problem is that, none of those monsters has the appeal and recognition that Godzilla has. You don't have to be a Godzilla fan to know who Godzilla is, he's an international icon, and people can use that. Rodan, Ghidorah, Gaira, Sanda, Mothra, I'm sure people will recognize them as Godzilla characters, but I doubt most people will turn and say "Oh look, Rodan!" More likely they'll get the "Oh look, it's a ripoff of Godzilla..."

I think what'll more likely happen is, if this movie is a big success and they decide to go with a sequel, they'll more likely introduce classic characters as they go. I know Gareth Edwards did mention that he'd be into a Destroy All Monsters type movie if he did a sequel. I'm sure with that they'd be willing to bring in some classics. Judging off the tone and direction that this movie seems to be headed though, I have a hard time seeimg them implement Monsters from space, like Ghidorah and Gigan, unless they want to give them some earth-like twist, which I don't want with those type of characters.

I think the problem with this idea is that while the Marvel superheroes are all wildly different, Toho's kaiju are all very similar. With Marvel you have films taking place in WWII, the modern era, across time and space in mythical worlds, with a vast supporting cast of characters and very different stories in each film. They keep the audience entertained because they change the superhero formula almost every movie. How many different ways can you make "kaiju smash city" fresh and entertaining? Mothra is probably the only other kaiju that's different enough in history, motivation, and supporting cast (Shobijin) from Godzilla to warrant a stand alone film. If they made stand alone films for Angilas, King Ghidrah, Rodan, etc they'd come dangerously close to losing audience interest imo.

I think you could make a case for a Ghidrah solo film being futuristic. The first half of the movie takes place in space as people try to stop Ghidrah from making it to earth. A War of the Gargantuas film could make a decent period piece of the 40s. Rodan could follow the Godzilla model. After that though it does kind of become rawr smash.

I don't think Marvel's model will work for kaiju.

There isn't a demonstrated market for multiple kaiju films in America. No other kaiju carries the weight of Godzilla himself. Monsters like Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah are all certainly well known enough in American pop culture, but I don't think they have enough to bring in a ton of viewers (and therefore not enough cash). At this point, even Godzilla is probably a risk. While I'd love to see a KG solo movie I simply don't think the money is there.

I think Rodan, Mothra and King Ghidorah each have the same name value as Thor and Iron Man had before their first movies came out. More, honestly.

However, name value alone does not sell tickets. See the disappointment of the Hulk for instance.

I highly doubt WB/Legendary would do this, but it would be perfectly possible to do profitable solo films for major and even some minor characters (War of the Gargantuas?), concluding with an Avengers-style (or DAM-style) melee.

But will it happen? Doubt it.

Which is fine because my cup runneth over with how sweet this new Godzilla appears to be.

Now that they brought Kong in they could bank off him and Godzilla. Mothra and Rodan both depend on how well their developed in Godzilla 2 or where ever they would fit in. Thats half the reason I think GTTHM should be next as after they film you will know if Ghidorah, Rodan or Mothra can hold a solo film.

Ultimately a new created monster or if Legendary could some how pull Gamera or Pacific RIm into this would be the way to go.

I'd rather they tie Godzilla, Kong and Gamera together and keep Pacific Rim well out of it. Despite what others say I don't think they'd fit well together. Let Pac Rim stay it's own thing.
