This movie is attempting to RE-ESTABLISH Godzilla though...

plus, one thing it really does SPECTACULARLY that most reboots DON'T do is the origin. We don't get 45 minutes of Godzilla origin story before the movie even starts in earnest, Edwards understands that we all know who GODZILLA is, so he doesn't waste our time trying to give us a ridiculous amount of background on a character whose background we all already know.

Oh and if you want to complain about reviews, this is the worst one ever. Essentially he says it's a good and entertaining movie, but that it's a monster movie and so it shouldn't exist. I imagine this guy hangs out at art house cinemas probing himself with a wine glass.

Probably due to all of the stupid reviews complaining about the director actually teasing and getting the audience worked up for a sizable pay off.

^I don't know. Seems to be holding up fairly well at 78%. I don't see too much of a significant change from that now that there's 120 reviews up.

Meanwhile, here's an interesting article on Godzilla's advanced ticket sales. I'm not entirely sold on how this all will add up, but it sounds promising:

The problem is, we are a generation of viewer have been trained to expect nonstop video game action out of our films. I mean, honestly. When was the last big film that you can recall that relied on subtle buildups and reveals?

Heading for the theater in less than 45mins. Going to BOTH advance screenings tonight (7 & 10) and then off to see it in IMAX 3D with my cousin and his family tomorrow afternoon. So pumped! WOOT!!!!!!!

I'm disappointed to find that Peter Travers only gave it two and a half stars out of four. I was looking forward to gloating to my mom that her favorite reviewer loved it. Oh well. (Incidentally, I remember him LOVING The Dark Knight. Peh).

His comment, by the way, was that Edwards didn't quite succeed in trying to have the same type of suspense as Jaws and Alien; he said it felt mostly like melodrama. But once again, I shall be the judge of that.

Seeing it at 9:50 tonight. Just about four hours to go....

I'm waiting for a matinee this weekend so I know I'll have a good 3d Imax seat. I am *NOT* taking a chance of sitting way off center for this. However, I can't help but share the excitement in this thread, and really throughout the forum. I want so bad to click on the spoiler thread, but I'm being a good boy.

I was *really* surprised this morning to hear the radio show host I listen to on the way to work mention that Godzilla was receiving good reviews *and* good word of mouth to which both he and his sidekick were pleasantly surprised. It just seemed kind of out of the blue because they normally don't talk about new movies much. It just feels good to have a G awareness level out there.

Using the Jaws template is fine if you have characters as interesting as those in that film and actors as talented as Scheider, Shaw and Dreyfuss.

IMO, the characters and performances in Godzilla outside of Cranston weren't strong enough to carry so much of the film.

Really curious how general audiences will respond. Will they get restless and bored during the weak (imo) middle section? Or will that outstanding final-act payoff send them home happy?

Sitting in the threater now (early) and the next 30 mins is gonna feel like an eternity.

As far as the reviews, I'm not sure that good or bad reviews correlate to money made by the movie - Transformers has had horrible reviews and they made tons of scratch. What we really need is a strong performance from the box office. The movie has enough solid reviews for me to think that at worst it is a decent film.

People are starting to trek in now and I'm at the 2D showing. The 3D showing (which I prefer 2D a anyway) had sold out yesterday. That's a good sign.

Just got back from the theater. Here is my review (that I posted somewhere else and slightly altered it for here)

I can understand why people didn't like it. They claimed it was a character driven movie. False, it kind of bombed at that. They kept pushing this "as if it really happened thing" and that didn't really happen either. It jumped around too much to achieve that and the only "as if this really happened" moments were glimpses of him on tv screens. Personally I think Cloverfield is leaps and bounds better in that department. I think if they just sat at one scene of devastation longer and showed the effects of it, it might of been pulled off So we got promises of one thing but ended up with another...

We ended up with a typical Godzilla movie. I'm used to that so that's why I ended up liking it. The "MUTOs" end up giving a pretty cool monster presence and I really enjoyed them as a Godzilla monster. He has some great moments in the movie like a nice tail smash move and unleashes his atomic breath. The atomic breath got an applause break. I was surprised at how much of a good guy he came across as. It wasn't as horrific as in the disaster scenes as I thought it was going to be. It was lighter in mood and definitely cornier than it comes across in it's advertising.

I felt that there were too many characters to develop any of them. They just act as vehicles to get you from one scene to the other. I'm hoping sequels bring more of the Godzilla and minimize on the amount of human characters.

I'm tired. I give it a 7/10. Good ngiht.
