Max Borenstein to write Godzilla

So, how do y'all think Borenstein did? I think he was fine... I believe they casted a bad actor for the main roll. ATJ just wasn't convincing enough, so people would think it was bad writing when it was really bad casting.

I hope they have Borenstein on board to work on script for GODZILLA 2.

I would be okay if Borenstein is replaced. He did an okay job, but I don't think his absence would hurt the sequel.

It does take a bit of the edge off to hear that Borenstein wrote the watch scene, which was the best of the human scenes in my opinion. It's an extremely major cause for concern that the longer version of the scene wasn't included. That scene, more than any other, harkens back to what Godzilla was originally about. By deciding to include only a shortened version of that scene...well, it backs up some opinions I've already held with regards to how this movie views the nuclear issue.

^I feel the exact opposite. Although I like the scene, I felt had they held the beat much longer it would've been force fed and heavy handed, much as I've aired before as well.

Heavy-handed? Perhaps. But the Godzilla series doesn't exactly have a tradition of subtlety. And in a movie as bland and inoffensive as this one, having something to say is better than nothing, even if it's said in a clumsy sort of way.

I don't understand the decision to not chose a scene that enforces dramatic gravity or substance to a film over a watered down scene. It doesn't make any since. Also, I applaud Watanabe's refusal to call Gojira by his western name. If Godzilla is addressed by Japanese, his Japanese name should be used. If addressed by an American or other western country, it should always be Godzilla. There should be no confusion on the matter.

I'll be very interested in seeing what deleted scenes are included on the Blu-Ray. Sounds like a lot of very interesting character development moments were left on the cutting room floor, probably for the sake of pacing (and, to be fair, the movie is very well paced IMO).

I also think that in addition to pacing, scenes may have been cut so the film wouldn't exceed a specific length. I mean the studio could've said, "It's too long, cut 15 minutes out!" Personally I wouldn't mind a longer movie for the sake of more character development, so hopefully they will be added to the Blu-ray.

Just for the record, none of the home media specs that have made their way onto the internet have said anything specific about deleted scenes. Something to keep in mind...

Guys, the answer is simple. Warner Bros wanted this thing to come in around the 2 hour mark. When studios make those demands, things get cut. It happens all the time. I can see why they would trim some of the watch scene to keep the run time down. Yes, a longer version would have been more emotional, but the way the studio looks at these edits, if the scene gets its point across, anything extra can be cut. I think the watch scene DID get the point across just fine, and a longer version would have been nice, but it also would have run the risk of being heavy handed

Max Borenstein will pen the Skull Island script. Who better to recreate Godzilla‘s success and serve as the bridge to Legendary’s inevitable King Kong vs. Godzilla remake?

I don't see how a new King Kong vs. Godzilla makes sense in the context of the 2014 movie. It would either have to be a standalone movie or not happen at all, which I'm perfectly fine with. Godzilla has a big comeback and people immediately want a crossover? I only want to see he costar with fellow Toho creations.

I listened to the Kaijucast episode with Borenstein, and honestly wasn't that impressed. The most humorous part of the interview was when he was asked his favorite Godzilla film, and he eventually got around to saying that he was not a fan, but then pivoted to say that the original was his favorite.

I get that not everyone working on the series isn't going to be a fan, that's to be expected. I think that could have helped contribute to some of the more serious aspects of the character getting axed, though. In particular, he really focused on Godzilla as purely being a natural disaster, and that if the humans realized that they should just let him do his thing, it would be fine. I didn't really get that from the movie at all, there was hardly any military intervention on Godzilla aside from the BRIEF scene in SF Bay.
