Yeah, I'm gonna need you to yank any copies of the film you've sent out to theaters and delay the release by another month to put a 10 second scene that nobody outside the fandom would get back into the movie. If you could do that, that would be great... I don't get some of these people.

It might be kind of presumptuous but this scene DOES kind of confirm he had a dialogue scene with Johnson, so chances are it really WAS the kind of "cute" cameo that only shows up as fan service, and the kind of scene that really didn't matter to the story. Like we've already established, those types of cameos get cut all the time to tighten up pacing/runtime for that very reason.

I know Edwards wants to put it on the Blu-Ray, which would be good enough for me.

I can understand why it was cut if it was the movie stopping in it's tracks to have Johnson get his ticket, go through customs, stop at one of the airport restaurants because his flight has been delayed and hour...

Having seen the film I can say that where that scene was supposed to be would have slowed things down and taken away from the movie. Where this is in the film is right as tension is building towards something.

I'm glad it was taken out and I'm glad it'll be on the blu ray.

What we don't know is that Akira Takarada was going to pull the Oxygen Destroyer out from under his desk and say "Just in case."

Having seen the film, I can say that I'm not even 100% sure where this particular scene would have FIT into the film. It would have felt really weird and been a moment (and there are still one or two others) where people would have said, "What was with that random cut to that random scene with him going through customs? That was weird..."

I still believe the whole situation could have been handled better for all concerned. What a waste.

They didn't intend to shoot the scene just to be scrapped. The scene was fully intended to be used and instead was given the "thanks but no thanks" treatment. Why even bother and put in the time, money and effort into something that does not contribute to the final cut?

Also, a production usually goes through at least three different films before a final film is released to the world. There's the film of the script, the film during production, and the film during editing. Having made several films myself I can tell you that the final film is almost always only about 80% identical to what you imagined when you wrote it or what you thought you were making when you were shooting it. At best. Things are constantly changing over the course of a production. It's very possible they thought Takarada's cameo would've been fine and dandy during principle photography and then it was a total clunker in the edit bay and it very possibly broke their hearts.

You've gotta kill your babies though. Rule number one of filmmaking, yo.
