"Emo?" The way some people talk about MONSTERS makes me think that they wouldn't know a decent love story if if punched them in the balls. The love story in MONSTERS is hardly groundbreaking but it's not bad by any stretch of the imagination. To belittle it as a "Stupid Emo Love Storyâ„¢" makes me think that the people who hated MONSTERS for that reason don't watch drama films in general because they don't have enough jetfighters or punching.
I, for one, am pleased they they chose a director who is equally interested in monsters and character-focused pieces. Yes, I realize that MONSTERS doesn't actually show the monsters very much but the fact that he used them at all when there are plenty of other more realistic situations he could have set the same story in is more than enough proof to me that he is a giant monster fan. Additionally, it tells me that there is a strong possibility that we will get a character-driven piece instead of a soulless action spectacle, which is something I'm VERY happy about.
