He also says throughout the interview that he approaches films differently based on the genre. He talks about how Moonrise Kingdom is its own thing and Zero Dark Thirty is a thriller, and he doesn't want to just copy his own style from film to film, because you have to make sure thrillers get thriller scores and dramas get drama scores, etc...
I like that. He's certainly thoughtful in that respect.
