Godzilla is apparently from the Permian time period, but it could be said that the KT meteorite at the end of Cretaceous reawakened Godzilla and mutated a few dinosaurs(*because it kicked up tons of radioactive debris buried under/in the Earth's crust)/other prehistoric life and when the radiation dissipated they went into hibernation. Ghidorah could be the alien that put an end to either era. Mothra could be a giant insect that uses pheromones to control or to communicate with other species similar to how a queen bee does with her nest. Her egg drained areas of radiation in the past so tribes people in the Pacific revered the egg for turning the areas of death back to life. (Shrugs)

Rodan falls in line with Godzilla (giant prehistoric reptilian creature) and Mothra with the MUTOs (giant insectoid creature - only benevolent in nature). Ghidorah however is malevolent and comes from space. There. It's not that hard. It's not like the first movie was even that 'realistic.' It might've had a grounded tone in how the humans reacted to the monsters, but the creatures were just as outlandish as any Japanese film.

I just now noticed this thread so this is a bit of a late reply... I admit I'm kindof finicky in how I choose to suspend my disbelief, and I can swallow a lot of B.S. one minute and be outraged by some other impossibility the next... I can handle giant monsters no probs, and for this series I'm hoping they stay away from the mystical, and I have no problem with Ghidorah being from space one way or the other... but the one thing I can think of that would drive me nuts is if they portray him as flying through the vacuum of space by flapping his wings or somesuch...
Giant asteroid = ghidorah egg, alien intervention etc., I'd be cool with that.

Mothra is a mystical being that could take any shape. Ghidorah is a living fireball who take the form of a three headed dragon, while on Earth. Rodan resemble a known flying dinosaur that feed on us humans.

I have not logged in for months so I thought I'd chime in....
This post is dedicated to the Donut and MFW
What the hell is that?
A golden three headed dragon that shoots lightning out of it's mouths....
OH
So what's that?
Giant Moth, but it's colorful like a butterfly....
Why?
I don't know...
OH
Then that thing over there?
Giant teradactyl or whatever scientists call them these days...pteranodon, whatever
Oh, ok. Well how is this possible?
You remember Godzilla and the Mutos? Giant monsters fighting all over the place?
Yeah
Same thing.
Oh, ok. Well should we leave? I mean they are getting close....
Naah, see they are scientifically impossible, therefore they can't exist in the "real world"
Oh, Ok. Wait, they are getting closer, shouldn't we leave anyway?
IT'S A MOVIE MORON, AND IN MOVIES.......ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!!!
Is that why I'm sitting here eating popcorn and drinking a gallon jug of Coke?
Dude, shut up and watch the movie....

I love the replies, guys. Keep em coming!
I personally believe they can explain Ghidorah as many others have mentioned.. Either as an ancient alien asteroid or one that crashes onto Earth in the present day. The more I think about it, the latter scenario is more likely.. Think of that scene as the asteroid comes barreling toward Earth, and then a short glimpse of something rising out of the carnage. Thats your teaser trailer right there..
Mothra and Rodan could have a similar origin to Godzilla. But that is boring and harder to explain as is. Were Mothra and Rodan at the bottom of the sea, leaching radiation from the Earth's core? Of course not.
A more likely scenario for them is to think back to GINO (I know, its sacrilegious, but bear with me.) How was GINO born? By the nuclear bomb being dropped on top of an island containing iguanas. Well, at the end of Godzilla 14, did a massive nuclear bomb not detonate? Could some of the impact of that nuke going off potentially cause creatures to be mutated.
However they approach it, I am excited to see!

I always wonder if anyone at Toho's looks at these boards from the 12 years I have been here.

I understand the knowledgeable Godzilla fan consensus that the "science" of the 2014 film was just gobbledygook, and that there is nothing too outlandish about Mothra or King Ghidorah that would not fit in that world. But...what bothers me is that you probably have the script writers thinking "Hey , we grounded Godzilla and the MUTO's pretty well in reality, we really have to work Hard to work on these new Monsters" . Then you have the casual movie fan, who saw the first film, and perhaps enjoyed it enough to go see the second, thinking exactly what will make most of your heards explode -That Godzilla was totally believable in a "real" world setting, but Mothra is just going to be ridiculous. Heck I even talked to someone who after seeing the 2014 hated it because "They totally changed Mothra" (thinking that the Muto's WERE Mothra) -yes this is true, you people should now I am in no way creative enough to make this stuff up. I explained to her, that they were NOT Mothra, but I that was still met with a "whatever I still didn't like the film".
I really don't see the writers coming up with an alien origin for King Ghidorah, unless Toho REALLY presses it, which I don't see happening. I'm not saying I agree with any of this, I'm just cautioning all of us as fans to prepare for what may happen. Sometimes you have to think like the common people, or the script writers, and not as fans to unfortunately see the worst possible scenario.

I know I'm in the minority, but I hope the final product isn't what has been rumored. Based on G14's execution, trying to introduce three new kaiju (each of whom has rich histories), will result in underdeveloped plotlines and shortchanged monsters. As long as the same creative powers are at work behind the camera, trying to shoehorn the supporting cast of GTTHM into G2 will result in dissatisfied fans both casual and die-hard. All the problems evident in the first one will be magnified threefold.
I'd like to see one of Godzilla's old arch-friends updated, but I'd also like to see some new kaiju join the ranks.
