That's interesting really. I noticed that the popularity literally exploded these last few weeks.

Brony-like following? Hah I don't think we're there yet (the fandom is a whole lot more diverse and not just older dudes, and they haven't flooded 4chan to the point of being isolated to a single board).

It's looking up and I think that's cool.

Looking at the episodes so far, I feel like I have to say this;

Pearl's my waifu, but Garnet is best girl. Garnet gives people chances, has faith in Steven, Greg and other people in general. It's a good quality and its why she's leader.

I've kind of passively loved this show because of Beach City (the music, backgrounds, everything does so much to make it feel like a place), but I also really can't deny how amazing the season 1 finale felt to me. It was like Adventure TIme except things have changed and mattered and aren't swept under the rug or resolved far too easily or quickly.

Again, on Beach City....does anyone else sort of feel an artificial nostalgia for that place? The music brings to mind video games I've played growing up and the sort of summer-y atmosphere the early eps evoked make me feel a weird attachment to a place I've never been and cannot go.

Of course, and yes - this is a much more diverse fandom, and not (yet) as clanish. I was merely talking about the way they're working: tons of gifs, an extraordinary amount of fan art and comics, ect.

I totally get where you're coming from: it's a mix of old video games, the real tourist-y beach cities you were taken to as a kid, and anime (more specifically: the '90s anime that meant so much to our generation). It's a place built by people who have a lot of the same cultural touchstones as us.

This dude ( http://dou-hong.tumblr.com/ ) has created some handy dandy model sheets for the characters that I can't stop looking at.

Notice the differences in costume after Garnet refuses and after Pearl's gem was damaged and had to 'reboot' her body.

I have indeed seen this! Nice share! Dou Hong was a character designer and colorist on Ben 10 Omniverse, and is currently working on Nickelodeon's TMNT!

I like his ______ and the ______ fanarts.

Part of me thinks that the old designs for the gems were their designs during the war era >_>

I just noticed that Amethyst's fanny pack from the pilot reappears on her casual beach-wear getup.

io9 gives us a neat interview with Rebecca Sugar and a cruel tease at the Steven Universe book she's written that's 5 months from release!

http://io9.com/steven-universe-guideboo ... 1704470546

No wonder they had to wait to show the cover art: it gives away Amethyst's redesign from last episode.

The two-month hiatus ends September. September starts next month. Hopefully we know the date soon!

Hmmm... glad the summer's TV drought is coming to an end. The return of Steven Universe, Doctor Who, and Stephen Colbert all in the same month has me excited!

Well, we're two episodes into what may someday be classified as the Peridot episodes.

Also: the DBZ influence has really become pronounced, in my opinion. The overall storyline of SU has been very evocative of the Saiyan/Namek/Frieza sagas.

New episodes return the first week of January with *drumroll* another Steven Bomb!

- and Steven Universe Funko Pops have started showing up at Hot Topic! I found Steven, Garnet, and Pearl a week and a half ago: no Amethyst. I checked the other Hot Topic across town: no Amethyst. I check again two days ago and not only did they now have Amethyst, but when I came face-to-face with this toy I didn't except to actually be in I yelled 'Amethyst!' so loud you could probably hear it for, I don't know, some distance away. They're all under the Christmas tree right now. I sure am getting a lot of toys for someone who swore off getting new toys a few years ago...

Still no word on when the series returns from hiatus. These 'Steven Bombs' are exciting, and apparently CN doing these full weeks of new episode premiers for their shows is working ratings-wise, because they're doing it for all their shows. I mean, sure, it makes them events, but I suppose in the end I'd appreciate a more regular schedule.

... in cooler news: BOOM starts a new Steven Universe comic book miniseries and releases the first Steven original graphic novel next month! I bet they were kicking themselves when they cancelled their ongoing comic (with issue #8) just before the popularity of the show really blew up.

I've been enjoying this round of Beach City focused episodes too. It's also nice to see more of Steven using his powers freely (lots of use when the Shorty Squad when to the amusement park), even with the recent Gem focused episodes Steven really hasn't used his powers much. Interesting to see that Steven has some level of super strength (I don't recall seeing much of an indicator before), Steven is at least as strong as 5 men, probably more, seeing how he easily he carried that large equipment case from the bus (an identical case needed 2 men to carry).

I'm a bit disappointed that we only have a couple more episodes this week until another hiatus.

So this week is the last round of new episodes for awhile; we're getting a lot of new backstory information too (especially the last few episodes).

Steven's super-strength could be a form of gravity manipulation, but after the episode "Steven vs. Amethyst" it seem more like Steven has proper super-strength in addition to gravity manipulation.
Spoiler Below:
You can guess from the episode title that Steven and Amethyst fight -- and it's a legitimate knock down drag out type of fight. Amethyst even craters Steven into the ground, so Steven has a level of enhanced durability/invulnerability

Episodes 99-100 - "Bismuth"
Spoiler Below:
Steven ends up fighting with Bismuth during the episode, and gets smashed into a rock wall in the Forge,

Episode 101 - "Beta"
Spoiler Below:
Jasper attempts a fusion with a corrupted gem and becomes corrupted herself, Steven tries to heal her but Jasper attacks him with a a corrupted clawed hand. Jasper cuts Steven's t-shirt and knocks him back but otherwise appears unscathed -- Steven's is obviously a lot tougher than normal humans, especially when he's been getting knocked around a lot lately. Also Steven's first fusion with a Gem, he and Amethyst fuse and form Smokey Quartz. SQ's personality seems a good balance between Steven's and Amethyst's and their combined weapon is yo-yo.

Of course now that I think about it, perhaps Steven being struck by Jasper's corrupted claw hand could lead to some future episode with Steven facing the corruption problem within himself. Perhaps this will lead to Steven and the rest of the Crystal Gems finding a solution to corruption problem and being able to restore corrupted Gems in later issues.

^Yup. Steven's super strong, super fast, can control his personal gravity, can shape change his bubble, multiple shields, healing spit...

I'm not reading that spoiler for Beta, 'cause I haven't seen that one yet.

And speaking of things I'm glad we got back to: the corrupted Gems played a bit part in the end of this season! The fact that they hadn't paid much attention to them (the monster-of-the-week emphasis of season 1, presumably still many of them out there) was beginning to bug me - but we got a nice payoff with the return of Centipeddle and the creatures Jasper captured.

Looks like I mixed up "Beta" and episode 102 "Earthlings"
Spoiler Below:
looking on the Wikipedia article on episodes, "Earthlings" is when Steven and Amethyst first fuse and Jasper is defeated

"Back to the Moon" 103 --
Spoiler Below:
The Ruby Squad returns after their wild goose chase around the Solar System, and Amethyst pretends to be Jasper so the CGs can get answers. We learn that Rose Quartz shattered Pink Diamond, which ends up being a big shock to Steven. They've spent a good bit of time this round of episodes on Rose Quartz, her past, Jasper and others calling Steven Rose Quartz, etc. I think it could be a long term build up for a return of Rose Quartz in some way. If it's a full return, I guess we'll see if Steven gets his own gem or something like that.

"Bubbled" 104 --
Spoiler Below:
This episode was interesting. Steven gets pulled out the moon base airlock by one of the Rubies after the Rubies had fused and then knocked loose by Sardonyx. Steven creates a bubble around himself and finds that Eyeball is on the outside. I was hoping that at least one of the Rubies would end up joining the Crystal Gems, particularly after Steven healed Eyeball's gem after it was cracked. We'll now that the CGs have the Rubies' ship, I can see Steven wanting to try a rescue mission in the future.

"Kindergarten Kid" 105 -- this episode is a fun homage of Wile E. Coyote & Road Runner cartoons

"Know Your Fusion" 106 --
Spoiler Below:
More fusion fun, with a second appearance of Smoky Quartz. No battles here, just Sardonyx enthusiastically trying to figure out Smoky Quartz's strengths. We do learn some of the"rules" that about what to expect when two gems fuse, IE the common elements between the two fusees are the basis for a fusion's strengths

I hope we'll get to see more development of the corrupted gems story line whenever we next get new episodes.
