Haven't been doing their specials either around Halloween or Christmas?

Hmm maybe. The Christmas special aired near Christmas, and the Halloween special aired near Halloween, but "Ladle to the Grave" was an August release. So since this isn't holiday themed its anyone's guess.. It is cool that it will feature Gargantua 2 (after the great "Cleansuit" episode last season).. i figure Adult Swim will unceremoniously announce it during a commercial of some other show.

The Special is technically part of the new season (same way the Halloween special was), but as to when it'll air...I just heard this year. Maybe November?

Yep. Jackson Publick mentioned last year that his and Doc Hammer's contract with Adult Swim called for a fifth season of ten half-hours (when accounting for commercials). The Halloween special was the first of those half-hours to air in 2012, and when the season proper aired last summer, two of those half-hours got combined into an hourlong premiere episode, for a total of nine episodes in season five.

Most likely, season six will also consist of ten half-hours, and Publick & Hammer confirmed last October that this upcoming hourlong special is technically the first two half-hours produced for season six. So we can probably expect the rest of the season to consist of eight regular-length episodes debuting in the first half of 2015.

While I do think it's somewhat disappointing that the fifth and (presumably) sixth seasons are both so short compared to earlier ones, especially the bisected and extended fourth season, the good news about all this is that this year's special is NOT the long-form, 60-to-90-minute special that Jackson Publick confirmed back in 2011. That's still coming in the future.

I almost forgot about the long-form episode.

It'll probably come next after season six. The question is, will it be a feature-length series finale, or will there end up being a seventh season to follow it? Or would they save the long-form special for the series finale in the future and renegotiate to produce a seventh season before it?

The upcoming Venture Bros. Super Special will air on January 19.

THE VENTURE BROS. SPECIAL – Space. The final frontier, where no one can hear you scream, revenge is only served cold, and the drinks are comped in the casino. Join the Ventures–and pretty much everyone they’ve ever crossed paths with–as they rocket to the Gargantua-2 space station for an epic, hour-long adventure that will change the Ventureverse as we know it forever. Created and directed by Jackson Publick and written by Publick and Doc Hammer, both of whom also provide voices for the special, The Venture Bros. Special is being animated by Titmouse, Inc.

The rest of season six will follow later in 2015.

He'd left after season 2. Bill Hader was doing the voice for (I think) the last two seasons.

The special was amazing. I kind of felt that while Season 5 had its moments it was a bit lackluster, especially in comparison with earlier seasons, this was amazing. So much fun, so much story. Now to see Rusty ruin this good fortune he's been given..

I was so busy being entertained it took a while for it to sink in that the special was a brilliant tactical movie!

The show has been building this dense mythology over the years and of late it's been almost swamped by all the subplots, but this week they (quite literally) blew a lot of stuff up, wiped the slate clean(er), and set up an interesting new status-quo for the core cast. Great work!

i still had this on the DVR, so i checked the credits and it is Colbert as Professor Impossible/Incorrigible

i did find one of the deaths to be a bit of a bummer because i thought it was a character that had a lot of potential and really added to Rusty and what could have been.

I was alright with a lot of the deaths, although I think one death (a certain angry man's death) is probably very comic book-ish. It feels like if he survived his last episode he's definitely going to survive this.

Season 6 trailer dropped last night. No idea what's going on for most of it, although it looks like Dean is looking at college and The Monarch is getting used to Mrs Dr Girlfriends new position in the Guild

Looks great. I admire this show for really diving headfirst into its mythos and letting the lives of these animated characters actually progress as the series goes on. The status quo is frequently changing and nothing seems to be sacred. This year's special, All This and Gargantua-2, felt more like a proper finale for season 5 than the beginning of season 6, as it took several fifth-season arcs to their logical conclusion and also built on elements from the fourth season that had been left alone up to that point (the Revenge Society and General Treister). It also did an excellent job of shaking things up so the sixth season can blaze a trail into uncharted storytelling.

Spoiler Below:
The old Guild of Calamitous Intent is no more, most of the old Council of Thirteen are dead, the Sovereign flew the coop (and possibly died in the process), and the Revenge Society is also disbanded. Now the new Guild's council will apparently include Dr. Mrs. The Monarch and Phantom Limb, but not The Monarch, and possibly also Watch & Ward as well as Radical Left.

The Venture compound has burnt to the ground but now Dr. Venture has inherited his brother's New York estate, which suggests a change of setting from... whatever state the series has been set in up to this point. The Monarch's flying cocoon fortress is also destroyed and now he, the Mrs., and Henchman 21 are living in The Monarch's childhood home in New Jersey. So now we've got Dr. Venture is New York and The Monarch just across the Hudson River in New Jersey. Marvelous.

I can't wait to see where they take this.

So far this has been a pretty good if not great season. I love the Monarch's family secret they let out in the latest episode, Hank's new girlfriend, and Rusty's latest move to return to Super Science (which immediately goes wrong of course).
