Variety:
Self-Control is Killing Japanese Movie Prospects
Mark Schilling wrote:TOKYO – A predictable handful of Japanese movies each year receive regular slots in international film festivals, especially if the films are made by such established auteurs such as Hirokazu Kore’eda, or Naomie Kawase, or by mavericks Takashi Miike and Sion Sono.

But for other Nippon filmmakers a lack of daring may be rendering Japanese films toothless and harder to sell abroad. In fact, there is a growing catalog of examples where opportunities to be interesting have been carefully avoided.

The way that films are made in Japan may be to blam

Sony Picks Up Cult Indie Director Sono Sion’s ‘Shinjuku Swan’
Mark Schilling wrote:The prolific Sono plans to release a total of six films in Japan in 2015. One is the monster movie parody “Love & Peace,” which is set for an early summer bow; another is “Hisohiso Boshi,” a Fukushima-nuclear-disaster-themed film without a firm opening date. Other titles have yet to be announced.

This movie is wild and fun. It takes a bit too long to get rolling, the first hour could have been cut down but the second half of the movie is awesomely bloody fun

NYAFF Review: Sion Sono’s TOKYO TRIBE Blasts NYC With Hip Hop
Two word for Sion Sono's hip hop opus? Beatboxing waitress.
Alex Riviello wrote:There aren’t nearly enough hip hop films out there. There especially aren’t nearly enough hip hop films that feature bloody yakuza battles, miniguns, and beatboxing waitresses. Fortunately Tokyo Tribe, the latest work of insanity from Sion Sono (Why Don’t You Play In Hell, Cold Fish), is here to save us all.
