I have seen so mucdh since I last posted on this board!

As far as the martial arts section, I bought Brentwood DVD's set of 10 Sonny Chiba movies, wich will take a small $20 chunk out of your wallet. The quality is decent, and the four Steer Fighter movies are all widescreen.
Among the most reccomendable in the series are Kinji Fukasaki's films Legend of the Eight Samurai and Samurai Reincarnation. As long as I'm on the point, I will needlessly plug Fukasaki's Battle Royale, which I believe has already been mentioned.

I have also had some time to watch some more Japanese horror. First, I'lll mention the Eko Eko Azarak trilogy: Wizard of Darkness, Birth of the Wizard, and Misa the Dark Angel.

I would also highly recommend the film Suicide Club.

i really liked princess blade, too. plus there's a G connection: the lead actress of princess blade stars in GxMG as the kiryu controller/pilot

There have been more EKO EKO AZARAK movies produced, as well as two television series. The second television series is running right now in Japan.

I don't know if these have been mentioned yet or not, but:

Seven Samurai (NO japanese film enthusiast, let alone film enthusiast at all, should be without this movie)

Returner (Awesomeness on a disc)

Since you like Horror, here are a few you should like.

Juon: The Grudge
Juon: The Grudge 2
Dark Water
Into the Mirror (not super scarey, but good anyway.)
Azumi (good action flick)
Ghost
Godzillasaurus

Speaking of "Dark Water", I actually enjoyed that more than "Ring". I don't know if I was over-hyped for "Ring" or what, but it really didn't scare me that much. "Ghost System" was also pretty good, in an odd sort of way.

Same here. I enjoyed the first film for the characterisation, seeing the different bonds formed and broken between the characters when faced with death. When it came to "Battle Royale 2" I enjoyed the great action sequences, seeing terrorists taking on the role of the protagonists, and the depth added to Takeshi Kitano and Riki Takeuchi's characters (in the first film Kitano just seemed rather, odd. I found in neat to see his character develop further (despite being dead), and Takeuchi was just flatout cool anyway).

I was disapointed in the ring as well. I also forgot to mention Kairo on the list. It's worth a look as well.

OK just re-watched it minus sleep depravation.(Sorry I should start a seperate Ju-On thread!)

Ju-on 2 mostly stunk! And now it looks like we have a junior "Sadako" for part 3!(or the US remake) .Japan is being invaded by girl ghosts who need a hair beret or whatever!
Ju-On 1 rules though!

I dunno about you people, but I really liked Onmyoji. Good mystical story.

Returner was awesome too and Princess Blade rocked!

Not only is the ever-lovely Yumiko Shaku (who resides in my avie :D ) in the film, but one of the assassins is played by the same dude who in GxMG portrayed the Low-temperature physicist!

Despite the mention of Musa, I'm surprised nobody has mentioned any other Korean masterpieces:
Friend
Nowhere to Hide
JSA
My Sassy Girl
Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance
A Tale of Two Sisters
Taegukgi - Brotherhood of War
Attack the Gas Station
Kick the Moon
Silmido
Memoirs of Murder

Did anybody see Ong Bak? Tony Jaa is simply insane with muay thai.

Yoji Yamada's TWILIGHT SAMURAI starring Hiroyuki Sanada... CASSHERN (not as good as the original anime series, but just a damned epic movie that looks slick as hell)... Available on R1 DVD: Takeshi Miike's SABU and BIRD PEOPLE IN CHINA... Yasuharu Hasebe's STRAY CAT ROCK: SEX HUNTER... Seijun Suzuki's KANTO WANDERER and UNDERWORLD BEAUTY... Noribumi Suzuki's THE KILLING MACHINE starring Sonny Chiba... Kinji Fukasaku's SHOGUN'S SAMURAI with Kinnosuke Nakamura and Sonny Chiba... Meiko Kaji starring vehicles FEMALE PRISONER 701: SCORPION and LADY SNOWBLOOD... ZATOICHI MEETS THE ONE-ARMED SWORDSMAN... ONMYOJI II... PALE FLOWER... THE DEMON... AUTO FOCUS... Fukasaku's GRAVEYARD OF HONOR and STREET MOBSTER... and the list goes on...

As Ghost mentioned, Kiyoshi Kurosawa's KAIRO (Pulse) is really excellent. He also did CURE (Kyua) which may be my favorite from this genre. Both creeped me out far more than Nakata's RING or DARK WATER. But those who like these films should check out Nakata's first, GHOST ACTRESS (Joyu-rei, or Don't Look Up). Very moody and cool.

Joji Iida's ANOTHER HEAVEN is another that rates high on the creepy scale.

Not horror, but Nakata's CHAOS is a very clever thriller.

And I'm not sure if they were mentioned, but the Pang Brothers THE EYE is great (what an ending!). Finally, the Korean film PHONE is really "Ring derivative", but fun in the same way.

Actually, I'm on a totally different kick right now. Just watched SAMURAI I (Musashi Miyamoto), 1954 by Hiroshi Inagaki starring Toshiro Mifune, and loved it. Already got SAMURAI 2: Duel at Ichijoji Temple on order, and SAMURAI 3 after that. Really great, beautiful sweeping film in the same vein as Kurosawa (and in color!).

August and I were at a Japanese video store a few weeks back, and the man was making me dizzy with his knowledge and exposure to Japanese film. Follow his lead, you should!

I recommend:

Sky High
Azumi
Versus
Battle Royale
Battle Royale II (good, but drags on too much)
Ju-on
Suicide Circle
Sakuya Yokaiden
Casshern
Returner (good, but only worth one viewing)

You know, I just recently saw Seven Samurai, and I had a hard time getting in to it. It was just so long. I did like Ukyo (ah, can't remember his name now, but he was the farmer's boy samurai) because he was so cool, funny, and made great points such as his conversation about the samurai causing farmers to kill people.

Oh yeah, and I HATED the Ring, both versions.
