I have to say I'm totally unfamiliar with Gen Urobuchi, Kobun Shizuno, Hiroyuki Seshita and Polygon Pictures. It's the opposite situation I had with Shin Godzilla where I was aware of Anno and Higuchi's previous work on EVA, Gamera, God Warrior, etc. So I feel little lost in reacting to this, I just hope it stands on its own in the same way Shin does from Legendary. It's amazing we have 3 different takes on Godzilla going on at once now. And it comes out next year too so we don't have long to wait!

I wonder if Funimation will get dibs on this? Considering they're more well known for bringing anime to Europe and the Americas, they usually do get distribution rights to major IPs like Dragon Ball Z and Attack on Titan.

Now...this has me excited. Polygon produces some amazing animation, and has worked on some of my favorite shows in recent years. I hope this film is based on something closer to the showa era. Hoping for LOTS of classic monsters in this film.

For those not familiar with Urobuchi's work, all I can say is: be excited.

Madoka Magica is basically the Watchmen of magical girl shows; an exceptional example of its genre, a gripping deconstruction of it, and a work that changed how other creators have approached that genre ever since. Much has been made of how dark and brutal Urobuchi's stories are, but what really gives them weight are how well he handles characters, and particularly character development. Anticipate epic feels.

Though I know nothing about any of the people involved, I'm excited for the idea of a Godzilla anime. Hopefully this allows them to do stuff that would be too difficult or impossible to do in live action, or just too expensive. And like Jelly said, there's definitely the potential for going a little crazy if they feel like it and having it be more "acceptable" to the fan base just by virtue of it not being one of the live-action installments. I'm definitely looking forward to hearing and seeing more about it!

So, we've got a new Toho Godzilla, an American sequel on the way complete with a clash with King Kong after that, and now a Godzilla anime. What a time to be a fan!

I like the prospect of an anime Godzilla movie a lot more than a TV series. Between Shin Godzilla, Legendary's unfolding cinematic universe, and now this new computer-animated movie coming from Japan, we're living through a very unique time in the history of the Godzilla franchise. As a fan, I'm excited to see what comes of this and the other films but I'm also concerned about Japanese audiences quickly getting burned out on the character again due to over-saturation.

If Toho produces Shin Godzilla 2 for a 2018 release, we'll end up having a new Godzilla movie every year for the better part of a decade, almost like a Millennium Series 2.0 that really puts the "alternative universe" concept to work.

I like that we're getting another solo outing for Shin Godzilla... but now that we've done that I want monster battles! I want as many monsters as possible in this film!

As long as it's good, I'm in. The Godzilla universe has lots to pull from (existing Kaiju and aliens) and from there the additions are endless. I don't exactly know how I feel about the 3DCG approach as I've never been a fan of it, but if the story itself is good and Godzilla is, you know, Godzilla...then I'm on board.
