The soundtrack sounds like a must-buy already. That track is reminiscent of his score for Godzilla 2000, but the first and last two minutes really make the monster seem like a god. Every time Hattori scores a Godzilla film, he gets better at it.

The soundtrack is absolutely the weakest of Hattori's Godzilla material. Although Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla and Godzilla 2000 had their issues, especially as far as fitting with specific scenes, they were at least better and more memorable standalone listens. Nothing in Planet of the Monsters sticks out and I already miss Godzilla's G2K theme.

I just find it interesting that Gareth Edwards has seen the movie.

According to our own ^^ Gman the movie premiered in 3rd place, which usually would be seen as pretty disappointing... but apparently this isn't actually a major release. It's only in 158 Japanese movie screens, as compared to Shin Godzilla's 448 screens. That means the anime's release is just 35% the size of Shin's. Seems for the Godzilla anime the theatrical release is kind of an afterthought, but not the main thing.

If it's not a wide release, but rather a smaller fan-catered release that should mean it'll be out of theaters sooner, right? I know the word was that Netflix would get it after the Japanese theatrical release, and that may be shorter than first thought.

Netflix probably don't know when they'll be allowed to release it yet, if it's a 'X weeks after the theatrical run ends' deal.

Can't remember where I read this in the last couple of days, but is the film's Japanese title a deliberate reference to the Japanese title for "Planet of the Apes" ? If so, I suppose that makes the "Planet of the Monsters" translation definitive, eh?

I don't speak Japanese, but... "Gojira no Musuko" has been translated as both "Son of Godzilla" and "Godzilla's Son" over the years. Wouldn't "Saru no Wakusei" likewise translate as either "Planet of the Apes" or "Apes' Planet"? My point being, if the Godzilla anime's title was meant to translate as "Planet of the Monsters" then wouldn't it be "Kaiju no Wakusei" instead of "Kaiju Wakusei"?

Godzilla: Monster Planet was #5 at the box office for the weekend of Nov. 25-26, with $424,052, bringing its total box office take to $2,515,508.

^I'd be disappointed... but, I mean, it seems to be doing okay for what it is: a limited release only playing in a third the amount of screens that Shin played at. I don't know what Toho's strategy for this is. Maybe the worldwide Netflix release was always the main purpose and the Japanese theatrical release was just a way to make a little extra coin?

Merch has been slow. New Shin G stuff seems to be selling faster than any of the Anigoji stuff. Definitely nowhere near the same interest levels on the Japanese market. At least there's more variety out with Anigoji than the G'14 release.

I wonder if Anigoji is something of a placeholder for Toho until the two MonsterVerse films? I mean, in terms of merch and branding? They have the distribution rights to the Legendary films in Japan, and with all the classic Toho monsters returning in Godzilla2 and then the rematch of the century in the following one I think Toho's eager to sell those.

Toho is definitely taking the same 'flood the market' approach that they've always taken with Godzilla. As long as the public seems open to new Godzilla movies then they'll try to get as many of them into theaters as they can.

Sony/TriStar isn't proceeding with a GINO sequel? Time for a new Toho Godzilla every December for six years!


Five years between the Legendary/WB film and its sequel? Fill it in with Shin Godzilla and an anime feature trilogy!

^But the anime thing is different: more low profile with a limited release, more designed for an international market with the Netflix deal. I'm not against this approach of, between big projects, having a smaller project keeping the name out there. This was almost a series instead of movies, and for the next break between films I wouldn't mind seeing an actual Toho Godzilla TV series.

Urrrrggghhh.... it's not on Netflix's list of January premiers. Seems February is a better bet.

Wait, is this gonna pop on Netflix in Japan as well, or is the Netflix deal just for outside Japan?

I recall a big deal being made by fans when Amazon made the "Kamen Rider Amazons" streaming announcement - 2 years later and still no sign of it outside of Japan.
At least Godzilla has a placeholder on Netflix and Polygon has a history of turning stuff around fast for international audiences.

Hi. I spent the holidays in Japan and was able to attend a screening at the Toho Cinema in Shinjuku. I was given a tiny black plastic bag prior to entering the cinema. Inside the bag was a tiny plastic Godzilla anime figure. It was a Thursday night screening around 9:50 pm. The auditorium had about fifty people in it. Even with my rudimentary understanding of the Japanese language and no subtitles, I was somewhat able to navigate the plot. I have to say, I was a little underwhelmed. The film seems to play the same note tonally throughout. Perhaps when I see it again with subtitles, I will
appreciate it more. The Xai song plays during the end credits. The song offered the much needed energy to exit the theatre to contemplate what I had just seen. Please know that I really wanted to like it. I’m hoping that it will play better on the small screen.
