Yeah, the show is set up up to trick the audience into thinking it's watching a standard magical girl show; then episode 3 ends, and all bets are off.

Madoka Magica was the first, and still only, magical girl show I've actually seen, but I was thoroughly impressed by everything about it. I've been meaning to watch more of Urobutchi's shows, but I guess now I should make it a priority.

What I'm most curious is if this will get a theatrical release here like Shin Godzilla. It would be great if Funimation picked this one up as well. Here's hoping...

Horrible (but certainly possible) thought: Toho insisting on an extended delay for the North American home video release of Shin Godzilla (so as not to compete with their domestic release) means we may be sitting in theaters watching the Funimation release of the Godzilla anime before we have Shin on Blu-Ray and DVD.

So, is this normal for GCI japanese movies, recording voices before animation? or this is the same with more traditional animation, or is this how anime is done now?

I could be wrong, but I've always been under the impression that voices are recorded before the animation so that the artists can integrate, or use as a guide, the actors facial expressions into the finished art. I believe it may also make the timing easier as well...

I wasn't aware that in Japanese anime the animation is done before the voice is recorded, which to me seems odd. But I do know that in western animation, the voice is always recorded before the animation. The voice actors are also recorded on video performing their facial and body expressions to help the animators. However, in addition to this, the animators use themselves as reference to act out the scenes their working on with either facial or body expressions. Take a look at behind the scenes of some Disney or Pixar animated films and sometimes you will see this being done. It's actually amusing to watch. Take a look at the making of Jurassic Park as another example, you'll see the animators acting like a herd of gallimimus to help them animate that particular scene. Very funny to watch!

Anyone who's interested in the hectic anime production process should look up a one-shot OAV from about 10 years ago called Animation Runner Kuromi. It includes an amusing scene of someone rattling through an entire episode script with a stopwatch to time out the necessary lip-flap for the dialogue.
