I thought it would have been cool to do a fresh story but considering how successful Shin was I figured Toho wouldn't just walk away from it.

Yeah, I'd like to keep Higuchi on effects (and away from the director's chair) if possible.
I think I've already mentioned my preferred lineup of possible directors: Kaneko, Sion Sono (fat chance), or Takashi Miike (who probably already has half a dozen films booked). I also wouldn't be surprised if Takashi Yamasaki, who it seems built a rep as the 'live action blockbuster with special effects' guy in the last decade, would be offered the job.
Of course, if Toho and Polygon have success with the Godzilla anime they potentially have a backup series to keep Godzilla in the forefront of pop culture and can afford to take their time with the live action followup.

I don't want a Sion Sono Godzilla film so much as I want Sion Sono and Kiyotaka Taguchi to team up again and make half a dozen kaiju films of any sort. Now. Yesterday. Please.

When you watch Shin Godzilla, you come out thinking Toho will be more susceptible to an auteur's touch in the future, but then you read the behind-the-scenes stuff, and realize that was nearly all by accident. Hard to gauge what direction Toho will go with because of that. However, I can't just see them doing another reboot after Shin Godzilla. It was too successful.
Between Anno and Urobuchi, Toho is going with people who have clear creative visions. With that said, Takashi Miike isn't going to make a Godzilla movie. He was one of the guys in the running for GFW (if I remember correctly), and despite being at the peak of his creative powers, Toho went with Kitamura. He's become much more of a journeyman director since then. He doesn't write his own scripts. Also, I can't imagine they'd give such a large project to Sion Sono, besides, he's already made a kaiju film.
Of all possible choices, I like Shinya Tsukamoto the best. He made it clear that he has an idea or direction for a sequel, and he's a legitimate talent. I would also like to see Kaneko return too, if only for old time's sake, but I just don't think it's super likely.

Seems a tad silly to have separate spoiler and non-spoiler threads this far into a film's release, but considering the film's limited release I understand it... between Funimation's release and the airline version of the movie circulating online I wonder if there's anyone who visits this board who hasn't seen it yet?

We'll wait until a blu-ray release stateside to merge the threads. I know that probably won't help our UK peeps, but it feels the most 'fair' thing to do, I guess.

Mama Mia! Shin Godzilla is coming to Italy!
http://www.scifijapan.com/articles/2017 ... -in-italy/Can't decide if I love or don't like this poster. If you think of the rather shoddy reputation Godzilla sequels have been saddled with over the years then the poster could be interpreted as insulting, but just taking the film on it's own it has a ton of humor and Godzilla himself is horrific, making the poster nicely ironic.
