EVERY movie in this day and age has a big second week drop. This is the new world. I'm pretty sure Civil War had a greater than 50% drop and it got fellated verbally.

EDIT: (Looked it up: almost a 60% dropoff for Civil War), the fact remains that MOST movies actually have big drop-offs. Especially when (as was the case with Godzilla) another big movie opens the next weekend. A week after Godzilla came Days of Future Past.

Well the irony was palpable having the new Godzilla film titled similarly to the Independence Day sequel.

It also keeps the movie firmly Japanese for anyone interested in seeing the film.

I am glad, personally. "Resurgence" makes no sense as a title given that the movie has no link to any other. It just feels like a cash grab on the new Independence Day and people who expect it as a sequel to 2014, which it would then make sense.

Why do I feel like Godzilla Resurgence predated Independence Day Resurgence as a title?

Maybe it's because I thought it was ID4ever for longer than it actually was...

I guess this goes for all Japanese releases--Why does the Japanese film industry not tally the Friday numbers with the rest of the weekend?

I know the movie market is different in Japan than here in the US; I presume that these are good numbers for a movie in Japan?

If rumors are to be believed then, basically it has already earned back most, if not all, of its budget this first weekend. So yes, probably really good. Would be curious how this opening weekend compares with previous openings. Probably creams the Millennium films in box office performance.

I've read at Box Office Theory and few other places in the last few hours that Shin Godzilla is projected to take the #1 spot at the Japanese box office again this weekend, for a Sat/Sun gross of about $5 million, meaning a total gross so far of about $20 million. That's what GMK, the most successful Godzilla film in the Millennium series, made in it's entire run!

This movie could very well be a huge hit for Toho!

Shin Godzilla now sits at $19.6 Million USD and is #1 again in its second weekend.

Welp. Looks like it has legs afterall. I doubt it could hold number 1 three weeks in a row, but two weeks in a row is promising. Yay!

Box office actuals are in: It only dropped 15% the second weekend and now sits at $20.8 Million USD. Attendance is at 1.5 million after 10 days. Supposedly on track hit $50 million USD or close to it. It has now made more money than every film in the Heisei and Millennium series, domestically.
