Kinda negative, but with some positive bits. In the end it calls the movie fair - but more important for this thread: it largely avoids spoilers, going into the reviewer's thoughts on the movie as a whole instead of revealing important plot points.

Yeah I like the "Who will know" track. That pretty much is the best original track there and that one theme is greater than anything from Final Wars or G'14. However the rehashing of older tracks seems slightly lazy to me. Not sure how I feel about the Evangelion tracks thrown into the movie. If it supports the visuals then that is fine with me. Desplats score kept the movie going and that's all I was looking for.

"Black Angels" is better, IMO, but the volume of recycled music on this OST bothers me.

This is more a fans' impressions video rather than a critical review, but it's spoiler-free, and encouraging to see how enthusiastic they were about it. The guy on the left is particularly giddy with excitement about the whole movie.

Looks like the box-office for the film was $6M over the two-day weekend and $8M including Friday's gross. In contrast, Godzilla 2014 did about $5M during its opening two-day weekend in Japan. A lot of the film's success will depend its legs over the next coming weeks. I'd assume if it hits around $30-35M Toho will probably move forward with a sequel, especially since the American sequel is dead in the water.

The movie lost its director and was pushed back a year. If Kong bombs (which isn't likely, but a possibility), it's going to get scrapped.

My point is that if this film's successful, Toho isn't going to wait for 2019 to capitalize on it.

If Pacific Rim got resurrected I don't think Godzilla 2 is going anywhere. Whether Kong bombs or not. I'm sure there is a director somewhere that wants to take a stab at it. Hey who knows maybe Paul Feig will need some work.

With two and a half years between now and Legendary's next scheduled Godzilla film, Toho certainly has enough time to make Shin Godzilla 2 or something before then, if they so choose.

Godzilla made $529m worldwide on a $160m budget. The only Legendary Pictures productions to gross more globally are Jurassic World, The Hangover II, and five blockbusters that had Christopher Nolan as director and/or producer. Godzilla is one of their success stories and there's more money to be made there so they'll definitely produce that sequel.

I'd love it if Toho made a Shin Godzilla sequel for a 2018 release. Two Godzilla series running concurrently? This is a unique time in Godzilla's history.

I knew it'd be fruitless for me avoid spoilers in the wait for an American release, so these first few days I've read up on a lot of the surprises... but now I'm kinda sated. I don't feel like reading any more detailed synopsis or watching more clips online. I'd rather save it for actually seeing the movie and everything in it in the proper context.

I don't know if I want a Shin Godzilla sequel yet. I haven't seen it.

It will ultimately depend if I like it or not.

I'm honestly more curious about Godzilla 2 from Legendary than maybe anything else at this point, in the Kaiju world. I'm VERY curious to see where they go from where we left off. I kinda think 2014 played it a little safe so as not to draw the ire of the fandom, and while I don't think we're going to get anything that's bats*** insane, I'm curious if they're going to embrace a bit more of the fun and inherent goofiness of kaiju fighting or if they're going to remain self-serious and no matter which path they take, how they're going to improve on 2014.


I honestly don't have that same level of intrigue for Shin Godzilla or any potential sequels at this point. This is not to say anything about the 2014 film itself in comparison to Shin Godzilla, just my level of curiosity and interest in the sequel.
