So, critical reviews in Japan are positive, but it's also important to keep in mind that critical reviews in Japan are generally more positive because it's considered impolite to write up a negative review. So, keep the cultural gap in mind not only with respect to the tone of the reviews but also the sensibilities. Japan IS a country that has some customs, traditions and tastes that stray pretty far from what we consider normal here in America.

While that is true, Japanese reviewers also tore apart the Attack on Titan movie too. So who knows.

I guess my only concern is the commentary on Japans political problems and the recent disasters resonates in Japanese movie viewers which might influence reviews. I'd like to hear from a hardcore Godzilla fan, preferably non Japanese on his take from the movie.

Godzilla '54 is innately specific about the time it was made: the Lucky Dragon No. 5 incident, the specter of the Cold War prospect of nuclear obliteration, ten years out from Hiroshima and Nagasaki (not to mention the equally destructive firebombing), the new generation of more Westernized Japanese citizens... That makes the movie even more interesting to me as a viewer.

We've already got Legendary Pictures turning out honest-to-god kaiju movies in Hollywood - I'm looking forward to the first Japanese kaiju film in forever being really culturally Japanese.

I haven't chimed in at all on this movie until now. My prediction - the film will be a good one, with a unique, original take on the character. I've loved almost everything I've seen so far.

I know the general anime fan base was opposed to the AoT movies. There was a dark cloud floating over that movie before it came out.

Reading the reviews, I'm interested of how this movie was done for the japanese, what I mean is that, for what I'v read here and other forums, people in nthe west still think the movie was made for them, like G2014, which is not the case. One should not expect gto see the same tipe of movie, for example, people in the States want's to see, I like the idea that the movie has been made for the japanese audience first, and not trying to be a western movie.
