I like the movie, but I would have preferred a classic Godzilla throughout by a wide margin. I just am not totally sure how they would be able to handle the "situation falling out of control" angle thee same way without ramping up of Godzilla's threat. I certainly think it's possible because G'84 features similar elements/themes.

I would consider this film a lot worse if I didn't enjoy the political message/aspect of this film. The movie does a good job (certainly better than G'14) at contermporizing the nuclear element of the Godzilla character for a 21st century audience.

I just want future Toho movies to get more...retro. It's funny how posters in the Millennium series wanted more "originality" in the franchise, but I think Toho over corrected in the wrong direction.

Speaking of retro...

I just LOVED how they not only incorporated some of Ifukube's musical cues into the soundtrack, but the ingenious use of some of Toho's classic sound F/X bites for the destruction & Godzilla's heatbeam. That put a big smile on my face. :D

I wasn't sure where to post this, but it seems relevant here given some earlier comments about the building detonation effects not being 'realistic'. I'd argue that they were stylised to look cool rather than hiding everything in a cloud of dust, but apparently it's more realistic than I thought! We're used to seeing controlled demolitions that cause buildings to practically disintegrate down their centre of gravity, but here's what happens when they mess it up: https://youtu.be/fms8r2dRu_8

I feel like Toho will approach each Japanese Godzilla movie as an individual project (hence following Shin with an anime trilogy) instead of looking to make an ongoing, shared continuity series like the Heisei series or the Monsterverse... at least for the time being.

Wonder if the Dallas Q&A will ever show up online. You'd think it'd be full of gems, or at-least provide hints regarding Higuchi's future involvement with the franchise.

I thought it might end up being that Godzilla vs the Nerds feature on the Shin Godzilla blu-ray, but apparently that's some interview with Matt Frank (...). Is the Austrailian blu-ray region free? Seems way more desirable on the special features front.

During his presentation today at G-Fest, Shinji Higuchi stated that Toho could not make another Godzilla film until after 2020 when the Legendary contract is up.
I'm guessing the anime falls outside of these guidelines hence why they are going that route to capitalize in the meantime.

^'Contract' ?

I kinda think maybe that the translation was a little garbled - as Shin was certainly made when Legendary still had the contract and Godzilla 2 and vs. King were technically both in preproduction, right? Add to that a couple of comments that the MonsterVerse could continue past the two films in production if they're successful. I suppose it just means Toho can't release a live action Godzilla movie too close to a Legendary live action Godzilla movie?

Maybe he meant that Toho's contract with Legendary stipulates that Toho cannot produce a new live-action Godzilla movie while Legendary is in active production on the 2014 film or one of its sequels. Toho had a similar deal with TriStar regarding the 1998 film and its would-be series. Once it was clear that TriStar and Sony were not proceeding on a sequel to GINO, that's when Toho started work on Godzilla 2000. That deal required TriStar and Sony to begin production on a GINO sequel within five years of the first film's release or their rights would lapse, so I guess if they had decided to move forward with it during that time, Toho's Millennium Series would have been cut short.

Legendary was developing Kong: Skull Island while Toho was making Shin Godzilla but now Legendary's Godzilla sequel is in the middle of filming. It makes sense that their deal with Toho would prevent Toho from shooting another live-action Godzilla movie at the same time, but it's cool that Toho is working around that by taking Godzilla to the anime feature format.

Understandable stipulation, but it's extremely depressing we won't see another Japanese Godzilla film for five years, and we're left with glossy reproductions of GTTHM and KKvG in its place.

Have to admit I'm a little disappointed, but it's not like we'll be waiting for another Japanese live-action film for four or five years without anything to hold us over in the meantime. We've got Monster Planet this year, presumably its two sequels following in '18 and '19, Godzilla 2 in '19 and then Godzilla vs. Kong in '20. Five Godzilla films in three and a half years... it's hard to complain. I feel pretty spoiled at the moment.
