I have to ask some of you then:

if Godzilla sprouted wings and flew, or wound up pulling a Destoroyah/Hedorah and splitting into dozens/hundreds/thousands of humanoid-sized creatures...is that still Godzilla?

That's a pretty GIGANTIC leap from the established Godzilla...arguably larger than anything the 1998 film did (especially the splitting into multiple life forms thing).

If he sprouted wings (or any other new trait, feature, ability, etc.), I could still consider him Godzilla IN THIS CONTINUITY as long as he didnt change appearance so much as to be unrecognizable as the same basic creature. Though I wouldn't want that to be a new feature common in Godzilla designs going forward.

If he splits into many of the humanoid creatures, I wouldn't really consider those to still be Godzilla, but more of a new monster(s) spawned from Godzilla. Similar in a way to biollante. Especially if you go with the theory that the dead professor guy gave himself to/merged with Godzilla when he committed suicide, thus providing the genetic material/blueprint from which Godzilla springboards the evolution of those humanoid creatures.

This is certainly a more interesting exploration of the concept of "Godzilla's asexual propagation" than laying a bunch of self-fertilized eggs in Madison Square Garden.

I have a feeling that if we do get a sequel that takes this concept further, it will be those smaller humanoid monsters that end up sprouting wings and flying around, not Godzilla himself. He can already swim from one continent to another when he wants to.

After thinking about it, its not the fact there were extreme changes to G98 that made him GINO, its the lack of respect in those changes. Yes Shin Godzilla has a ton of almost preposterous changes but they were respectfully done to make him more God like. If they gave him wings and an aggregate form, I think I would totally be cool with that. With G98 there was no respect so they dumbed Godzilla down to a dumb, pregnant iguana that ran from helicopters in missiles. Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich used a bunch of silly changes to explain in a poorly scientific way how Godzilla could exist and as such made him a weak, monster that was nothing like Godzilla. Ano however added a bunch of silly changes to Godzilla that made him seem almost omnipotent and God like. No matter how far fetched you think tail lasers, back beams, turkeyzillas, and Goji humans are, you could still tell there was respect for the character. I can see why some of those changes would urk people but for me they work and keep in with the spirit of Godzilla being more than a big dumb radioactive dinosaur.

Finally watched this the other night. I won't go into a lot of details that's already been dissected on here. Just that I thoroughly enjoyed this reboot and Annos fresh, new take on Godzilla. It was refreshing for me compared to the many years of the Godzilla that we have been use to seeing. I'm looking forward to the sequel.

Godzilla '14 certainly wasn't pro-nuclear, but it was more casual with its use of nuclear weapons simply because it was a film made by the United States. It was great seeing a Godzilla film so firmly restate the series' anti-nuclear weapons stance.

The 8-second bit in the movie where people are "worshipping" Godzilla is infinitely more interesting than anything the movie attempts in the second half. If they had dropped the satire and focused on that idea, rather than dropping the satire and focusing on...origami and ridiculous musical cues...the movie might have been quite a bit better.

Some new concepts have popped up and are furthering my opinion that this moght as well be referred to as GINO just like the 98film, and FURTHERMORE (and maybe more importantly) making me feel like Anno had less interest in making a Godzilla movie than making some movie and slapping the name Godzilla on it.

I think they look interesting. I'm intrigued by the idea of Godzilla people running around and causing havoc, but I'm not sure it's a concept I need to see in a movie. Maybe in a sequel mini-series to Godzilla in Hell.

Hmm, well, whatever they were, they were obviously deemed not fit for the movie and left behind. I think it's rather unfair to judge a movie based on unused concept art and ideas. Lots of movies (including G'14 and many Toho Godzilla movies) have gone WAY "out there" with concept work in order to really nail down what's important for that particular film and leave no stone unturned when it comes to brainstorming. It gets the best work out of the creative talents to let them run wild and then reign them back in, using the best ideas and discarding the rest.

I think the final product should be judged for what it is, not what it might have been or the wacky ideas brainstormed during development.

I got the "Art of Shin Godzilla" book yesterday. It is INCREDIBLE. It is huge and packed with everything from building layouts, seating assignments, miniatures (that i didnt know were miniatures), behind the scenes, pre-prod, concept arts, etc, etc. It is the best artbook i've ever seen.

90% of what i have seen circulating on the internet is from the concept art section which is only a tenth of the book. There is one thread that they explored briefly in film that i wish they had taken further after seeing the concept art.

Anyway, i dont spend much time in these parts of the threads because of the amount of time people spend sh*tting on films that i genuinely love is more negativity than i care for, so I'll leave this video here and eventually kick off a proper thread in the books section. You can probably mute the audio of my mumbling narration, but it should give you an interesting look into this film
