This stuff is cool. We hardly see official Godzilla crossovers and it isn't hurting anyone or anything. Would love to collect some of the merchandise.

The more I see them push this Eva nonsense, the more I'm certain the movie itself is going to blow. They/re putting all their eggs in the Anno/Eva basket, and I think it's going to blow up in their face.

Do you have any idea how popular Evangelion is in Japan, and how much it owes to tokusatsu works like Godzilla and Ultraman? It's a big deal to see Godzilla and Eva together like this. Anno himself has even said, "I think that, even more than anime, Japan should first of all be proud of Godzilla."

First, we had Godzilla with the EVA-01 colors, now we have EVA-01 with Burning Godzilla colors.

Evangelion's Unit-01 Receives Burning Godzilla Makeover

Image

Figure manufacturer Kotobukiya will release an Evangelion Unit-01 plastic model painted in Burning Godzilla's color scheme from the Godzilla vs. Destoroyah film this November. It will presumably go nicely with Bandai's Eva-colored Godzilla figures, another part of the ongoing Godzilla vs. Evangelion collaboration that began with an April's Fools update to the Godzilla Resurgence film's website.

The Godzilla-themed Unit-01 model is 19 centimeters (7.48 inches) tall and is priced at 6,200 yen (about US$59.41). The Godzilla figure designed after Unit-01 is also available for pre-order on Premium Bandai.

The collaboration also spawned a MechaGodzilla figure with Evangelion colors, offered with pre-orders of Godzilla Resurgence movie tickets, and crossover art of a battle between the two forces.

Hideaki Anno, director of Neon Genesis Evangelion is also the chief director and writer for Godzilla Resurgence, coming out in theaters in Japan on July 29.

It came full circle.

Is that going to be something for sale or was that a fan made sculpt?

That thing is pretty crazy looking. I want it.

Is that not just going to be Mecha-GINO? Yoji Shinkawa based Metal Gear Ray's design on Godzilla '98 if memory serves. And this mecha looks like Mecha G'98. Big chin, tri-segmented legs. And the spins are triangular and pointing towards the head.

Not that it's a bad thing. I've grown to like Zilla's design. But it just seems odd for a Zilla nod to show up in all of this. Regardless, I'm excited to see the final product and so want one.

ANN: Godzilla x Eva Mash-Up Reaches New Heights at WonderFest
Godzilla and WonderFest share a special connection. The first garage kit event was held in 1984, the same year Godzilla was "resurrected." The first film for the so-dubbed "Heisei Godzilla" was The Return of Godzilla released in December 1984. The film would lead into the "VS series" pitting the titular monster against the likes of Mothra, King Ghidorah, and MechaGodzilla.

The booth also displayed the Evangelion Unit-01 plastic model in Burning Godzilla's color scheme from the Godzilla vs. Destoroyah film, the Unit-01-colored Godzilla, and prints of the artwork drawn by Takashi Murakami (Superflat Monogram, 6HP - Six Hearts Princess), Mahiro Maeda (Gankutsuou, Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo), Shinji Nishikawa (Godzilla monster designer), Akira Amemiya (Inferno Cop, Ninja Slayer From Animation), and more.

Nice! Yoji Shinkawa also designed the M-Organization battle suits, the Gotengo and other warships for Godzilla: Final Wars.

It's from the mobile game Monster Strike which features some Godzilla monsters.

I think it's based more on an Evangelion, which are also thin and sport large chins. Also the fins might be based on their shoulder pylons.

I could really care less about this crossover stuff. It's a brilliant marketing idea by Toho to cash in on Anno and Evangelion, but the only appealing items are the X Plus Kiryu variants and I will still be skipping those (despite them bring pretty cool).

It's amazing that this struck such a cord and products for it are still coming out. It's like a movie's worth of merch with no movie.
