^Yeah, but that was it's own bag. GINO didn't perform as well as they'd hoped commercially; critics and fans disliked it; I think they were technically still considering GINO 2 at that point, but there was no steam behind it - in short, they decided to do something different with the property, and that was giving the people what they said they wanted with a low budget (for the U.S.) Japanese Godzilla dubbed into English. It made a little money, and there was even that plan to make low budget American sequel with Japanese-produced suitmation sequences, but overall it was a blip and not an event.
So, the differences are:
- Godzilla '14 was a financial hit, and was generally accepted by fans and critics
- They're making a new series of films starring Godzilla and King Kong
- Giving a wide release could confuse people expecting a follow up to G'14
- A wide release can be expensive, and a limited one costs less but still gets the movie out there for fans who're already clued in
Then again, a no-budget movie like The Witch got a wide release, and was sold pretty much entirely on the hype it had acquired from the critical reaction to it's festival showings last year, so what do I know about releasing films? I just hope to be able to see the film in a theater, whether it's a wide release or one-night only thing.
