Godzilla is the original radioactive superhero -- or antihero, in this case. The reptilian giant was born out of a genre of Japanese film called Hibakusha Cinema, developed in the unique cultural climate of post-war Japan.

I mentioned in my review of the film that I saw the influence strongly in the new Godzilla not only of Fukushima, but of Chernobyl as well. Especially in the scenes of the abandoned city 15 years later, slowly being reclaimed by nature, which bears striking similarity to the fate of Pripyat City, and probably predicts the future of the Fukushima quarantine zone.
