I am kind of a Millenium fan, though a half-hearted one at best. Obviously, the Showa era is Untouchable Goldâ„¢ to me, then the 80s Godzilla films are an excellent, if shaky, first step towards a bright new future, which then quickly careens off the cliff of quality and explodes like so many ill-fated Hollywood cars. I've found a new appreciation (relatively speaking) for Godzilla Vs. King Ghidorah simply because of how retarded it is but everything after that gets worse and worse, capping it off with the simply dismal Destoroyah. Blah. By comparison, the Millenium series is a breath of fresh air - or at least a breath of clean-smelling-but-pretty-stale air that you pull into your lungs after having just escaped from the pit underneath an outhouse. The Millenium series is, for my money, far more competently executed than the abysmal 90s films but they are largely too safe for their own good, hence why my interest and love for them has been waning greatly over the past year and a half or so.
My love for the Ultra series is pretty much equal for both eras but where the Godzilla series spiraled into mediocrity, Ultraman continues on strong.
I can't really comment on any pre-00s Kamen Rider because I haven't seen enough, I just know that that series has become even more soulless and awful than the Godzilla series had. UGH. Except Double, because they got new writers, bless them.
And Amemiya Vs. Kaneko? Oof, I'd rather not even go there. Honestly, I would say they're of equal talent in wholly different ways. While it's true that Amemiya's surreal, lavish style tends to rub me the right way a little more often than Kaneko's more grounded work, I can't honestly say I prefer one over the other.
I'm sorry, what was the topic of the thread?
Oh, right.
Well, if Japan won't make anymore Kaiju films then I'll just have to do it myself!
Seriously though, I'm glad there are still people like Kiyotaka Taguchi (G, Geharha) out there - indie directors who can do a LOT with a little budget and a dream. He's a huge inspiration to me, to be sure.
