Wow! This is a great topic. My initial impression of the design under discussion was that it was Godzilla. I have issues with aspects of the look, but I would expect Legendary to employ a design that is calculated to have a mass appeal. I want to take them at their word regarding producing a Godzilla we all want to see. As for "Spikey" here, a lot would depend upon the changes suggested by Toho, to what degree they were incorporated into the final look, and how it was portrayed on screen.

I really don't think that suitmation will be the way Godzilla is effected. It would be nice, if done skillfully and judiciously augmented with CGI. Then again, with Legendary's resources (which apparently include time), analog based effects could be very convincing, real enough to sweep the non-fan into the whole experience by being "real enough."

If I was a member of Legendary's Godzilla Project Titular Kaiju Design Team (GPTKDT), I would lobby for a modified GMK-Goji, if Godzilla was the bad guy in the story. Of course, a lot would depend, design wise, on what they want Godzilla to be and do. If he's to be the Defender of the Earth, than I would go with a modified Bio-Goji (from Godzilla vs. Biollante).

In addition to the aforementioned suggestions, I think the Shodai-Goji design from Gojira '54, with some modifications, would be excellent, especially in a reboot.

If the GMK-Goji look was the design of choice, I would hire, if available, Shusuke Kaneko as a consultant.

Here's what confuses me, and I too think that spilkey does say "modified Godzilla" more than GINO, but it's a bit to Todd McFarlane-esque for me. I'm waiting for him to fight Spawn.

HOWEVER, let's look at GMK (Which I've grown to like more and more) We have a design that during it's production was the center of a heated debate...White eyes, big teef, big feet, pot belly and turkey neck. That was pretty much overcome by how he was portrayed on screen but it still was controversial.

Not to rehash, but how much has changed over the years, Biogoji which is my favorite, looks as different from 54 as it does from millenium BUT, in general they are the same...GINO was not, Spikey here is in general Godzilla and if a layperson were to see him they would maybe think some sort of villianous clone of godzilla...WAIT, THIS IS WHAT SPACEGODZILLA SHOULD HAVE LOOKED LIKE!!!! Anyway, I think Spike could indeed be used as a jump off point and perhaps a future villian similar to Venom, see where I'm going, it's the same, but different....but can be confused for the original depending on the person who views it.

I like how long this is taking to roll out, they could make a steaming pile of GINO, and drop it into any blockbuster weekend next year or 2013 and have it fail, but no, they are apparently doing exactly what people have cried, bitched and threw "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!" fits all these years...."Imagine if they took their time and spent the money to do this right, how awesome Godzilla would be..." You're getting your wish, now stop "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!" complaining!!!
