I think you are getting alittle ahead of yourself there Ben.
Yes, I agree with what you have said. However, there will always be a... how do I put it, sort of anti mindless blockbuster crowd out there that do not put effects quality on the top of their agenda in order to enjoy their cinematic experience. This is evident in such films as Where the Wild Things Are, The Mist and even Cloverfield. While these films aren't the number one film of all time or even that much of a success at the box office they were given respect and will be remembered by film fans long after the seasonal blockbusters have gone. Even a select few, like Paranormal Activity and The Blair Witch Project became surprise hits.
What I am getting at is of course a new American Godzilla production won't win Oscars and be number 1 at box office for months, but if done right it has the potential to be looked upon favorably by critics and, who knows, become another surprise hit. It is just unfair to compare it to the likes of Avatar. Yeah it won't be have as much of a look as that movie has, but you are talking about a movie that cost, what, like 400 million to make? Nothing is going to compare.
