What about a post-apocalyptic Godzilla?

So one thing that kind of bugs me about my favorite sub-genre is that the vast majority (maybe all?) of giant monster movies boil down to one of two plot formulas:

-Oh crap, a giant monster! He's killing us a lot! We need to find a way to stop him!

-Oh crap, a giant monster! Oh crap, another giant monster! Hopefully they'll fight each other instead of killing us a lot!

And that second formula is usually just tweaked with however many monsters are in the movie. But maybe Godzilla needs to do something different when he comes back?

I love post-apocalyptic movies and stories: Mad Max, Children of Men, the Fallout games... even Godzilla Unleashed was basically a post-apocalyptic piece of fiction. What if the next Godzilla movie did that? Wouldn't you like to see a world ravaged by a Godzilla that we weren't able to stop? What if it wasn't just Godzilla? What if Godzilla and his monster pals were never repelled by the forces of man, and took over the Earth as their own?

It could include flashbacks to the epic monster-mashes that destroyed the nations of Earth, and the mistakes we made as a species that led to us dropping from the top of the food chain, reduced to scurrying scavengers, hiding in ruins.

I see a lot of posts clamoring for a "dark" Godzilla movie. You want dark, have the movie start decades after we've already lost, civilization in shambles.

Would this be the ideal way for Godzilla to return to the silver screen? Maybe, maybe not. Do I think it's an interesting idea I'd love to see talented film-makers explore? Hell yes.

As I've posted in other threads, a Godzilla movie that's dark/serious and violent is the way to go. Other people disagree, but I think they're just wrong.

GFW was pretty close. I mean humans weren't totally wiped out,but we were losing, pretty similar to the future in Terminator.

This is true, and I was thinking this as I wrote the original post. But I think to start the movie a decade or two after humankind had lost could make it different enough. More about a lone band of humans trying to escape to a kaiju-free zone than a resistance with the toughest monster on their side.

I'm starting to think that many of these posts are from the same person using different names.

Haha, maybe... but this concept doesn't actually sound too bad to me... at least it's different than what's been done in Godzilla films before...

Kind of like "Land of the Dead" Godzilla-style...

i think it could be interesting, but I'd have my doubts as to whether Toho would be able to pull it off...

I've thought about a concept like that for awhile too. No one can say this is overused in Godzilla.

Solid idea, and at some point Heaven can utilize a Holy Mecha to assist in the battle against Satan.

To hell with a Holy Mecha. I just want to see Godzilla in Hell with hordes of demons being sent to destroy him while he nukes them all down. Slayer and Kreator would be contracted to do the soundtrack of course as the idea is totally metal.

If he is already there, then I'd think he'd be in good company.

Only if there are Vikings.

That's the third part of the trilogy.

They did that. It was called Neon Genesis Evangelion.

So, basically Ghidrah, the Three-Headed Monster with the Xians replaced by Goke, Body Snatcher from Hell?

Sounds more like "Reign of Fire" to me, at least as far as the apocalyptic scenario is concerned. Don't get me wrong though, I don't dislike the idea. In fact, if done right, it could be quite awesome. Definately something I'd like to see...

So he'd have to re-fight past foes? That might be rad, actually...

Why not have a movie in which Godzilla reappear on Earth after humans left it. A kind of Life After People movie with Godzilla as the star. :D
