The main problem with the third series is that while the films were enjoyable, most of them had the feel of been there, done that as most of the films borrowed elements from the previous entries in the series. That combined with the fact that I felt like they brought the series back way too soon made the newer installments seem like they weren't up to par, even if they probably were in many respects.
So first of all, I think that Toho should the series dead for a while, like maybe until 2015 or something. As for ideas, well there are plenty of things they could possibly do.
1) I'd like to see them create some new foes. In the 60s & 70s, Toho seemed to have a relatively easy time coming up with new oppoents for their star: Ghidorah, Gigan, Hedorah, & Mechagodzilla were some of Godzilla's best foes, and combined with established monsters like Rodan & Mothra, it was a true joy to watch.
The Heisei series took a gamble with Biollante, and it didn't payoff initially, but it is still a very good entry into the series, and fans seem to have excepted Biollante over the years. Toho then made the smart move of mixing new creations with their old classics resulting in the creations of Battra & Mecha King Ghidorah, who were both great. By the end of the series, things had been established and both Destroyah & Spacegodzilla were easily acceptable enemies for Godzilla.
Now the third series seem to have problems introducing new monsters. Orga, while having his cool elements, seemed to be a creature combined from Gamera & the American Godzilla, while Megaguiras stemed from the Meganula from Rodan and borrowed from Battra & Legion. None of those seemed to work overly well, so they went back to the trusted method of recycling the classics like Mothra, Ghidorah, Baragon, Mecha G, Rodan, Anguiras, Gigan, and various others. Even the seemingly new Monster X was just an updated Ghidorah. There were really no truly impressive new oppoents for Godzila during this time.
Of course the series is at a point now where they've done everything, so what could they possibly have Godzilla face that hasn't been used before? I have a few ideas:
How about Godzilla vs. a Giant Vampire Bat? They could do something where a Vampire Bat drinks Godzilla's blood and mutates, and they could have a really violent battle with the bat trying to suck Godzilla dry.
Or how about putting him up against some kind of Ice Monster? Godzilla has been in snowy environments before, but he's never really faced anything like an Abominable Snowman or an Ice Beast or something of the like.
Or how about a Mechat that isn't based off an established monster? We've seen Mecha Godzilla, Mecha Ghidorah, & MOGUERA, but there hasn't been a robot that is a completely original (Ok ok, except Jet Jaguar, but he was ripped off from Ultraman)
Or why even have Godzilla fight a Giant Monster at all? That happens in every movie, so why not do something different. Like maybe they coudl do something where one of Godzilla's rampages results in a nuclear breakout that causes the dead to rise ala Night of the Living Dead and as the dead takes over Japan, Godzilla arrives and the Zombies become like a swarm for Godzilla to fight. Basically my idea is a Zombie flick with Godzilla thrown in. I might be pulling that one out of my asss, but whatever.
OK, I don't have many ideas, but its a start. And if they create a new monster, they could introduce it along side an established one like they did in the Showa & Heisei series.
2) If you are going to bring back some old monsters, bring back some of the Heisei crew.
The Heisei series IMO was a strong series of Godzilla films with some impressive new foes and I think if Toho tries to bring back guys like Biollante, Spacegodzilla, & Destroyah instead of going back to Ghidorah & Mothra again, it could work out quite nicely.
3) Dream matches? There are a few monsters that Godzilla has never faced one on one before that would make for an interesting movie if he ever did. Obviously the big one is Godzilla vs. Gamera. Kaiju fans would crap themselves if they ever made that one. Godzilla has also never faced off with The Gargantuans from War of the Gargantuans, and mixing those two Toho classics into one would be make for some good stuff. One that I've always wanted is an entire movie dedicated to Godzilla vs. Rodan. They had two fights in the past, but they never got to star as foes against each other in the same film. It would be interesting to me anyways. And they've already done it once, but with the recent King Kong remake, why not try to work things out and remake King Kong vs. Godzilla. Hell I'd like to see it done in the States, even if they use GINO. It would just make for a really fun movie again. Those are the biggies.
