Before I started living and working in Japan, I would have totally agreed that a Godzilla vs Gamera film would be a "can't miss hit" that would automatically light the box office on fire and re-energize the kaiju-genre.
But after being here for awhile...I quickly discovered that current audiences here are almost as clueless about Godzilla as many North American film-goers. They too make fun of the films' "cheesiness" And interest in the genre is virtually dead at this point. It was quit shocking and depressing. Hell, finding the recent new bandai Godzilla figures isn't as easy as one might think...and I live in a huge city in Japan for crying out loud!
Considering how bad the recent Gamera flick did at the box office, I have doubts this would be the runaway hit we all believe it would.
And while GvsGamera would be intriguing, I am not a fan at all of crossovers. A head to head battle would leave alot of bitter fans upset over who did/didn't win. And seeing Godzilla/Gamera vs King Ghidorah/Jiger would be fun, but a little hokey.
Truth be told, a Godzilla vs Ultraman would probably be the only concept that would definitely get people's butts in the seats again. Ultraman is so popular over here that it's absolutely rediculous. Honestly though, I never want to see this film happen....I *
HATE* Ultraman. Yeah, yeah, I have heard it all before..."Ultraman was created by Tsubuyara, Baragon and Godzilla costumes made appearences on the show, the same types of sounds and special effects appeared on the show, so you must like it too if you like Godzilla...blah blah blah." Despite all that, I still don't like it. I will admit, some of the kaiju he battles are quit cool (Red King in particular). I've tried to like Ultraman, believe me...I watched quit a few Ultraman shows, and honestly, the problem is that I don't any passion for the character of Ultraman himself. Godzilla has personality and a soul...Ultraman to me lacks all those traits which makes me love Godzilla's character. He seems like a souless, commercial creation whose main purpose is to sell lots of Bandai figures (I cannot tell you how annoying it is to go to a shope hoping to find some great Godzilla figures only to *ONCE AGAIN* find nothing but endless Ultraman figures overflowing everywhere
). And the current new Ultraman show they have been playing over here is just downright terrible. Just my opinion though as a realize he is hugely popular with many fellow G fans.
And quite frankly, if facing Ultraman or Gamera is the only way to get audiences interested in seeing a Godzilla movie again, then I think I would rather they just wait for 5-10 years before starting the series up again.
