Kong cost about that much, if not a little more(I heard $245 million somewhere), with Jackson giving up some for extra props or effects...chump change comapared to the overall estimate.
I don't think it was that much of a disappointment, but at least the notion that "They got close".
Well, again, for the sake of argument, let's imagine that by some odd circumstance, New Line or Lion's Gate picked up the rights to godzilla out of desperation or an after-party hangover.
Now imagine that TOHO got real anxious to make an international Godzilla movie, again out of sheer madness, and decided to help back the american production, at least halfway.
During this process, say a young up-and-coming screenwriter, straight out of a hit, is attached to write the script. He's a HUGE fan of kaiju and can't wait to start. So he looks around and comes here. After getting a general idea, he writes his script, sends it in, and it's approved - by a studio exec who actually read it through and loved the ideas. He then sends a copy to TOHO for their people to read(as per the contract agreement) and critique, and if possible, add to it. They ship it back and the exec reads it again and is mesmerized. He snds it back to the author to look over and fine-tune. the script is done and...the movie's greenlighted.
Now, because of this newfound trust, they decide to give TOHO more leeway and allow them to hand-pick the monster design, the backdrops, and the central location for the film. They also have the ability to choose their own actors to cast, should there be type-cast roles in the movie. All the americans have to do is find a competent director, a good list of actors, and an effects company willing to do the work....and Stan Winston, because TOHO obviously wants some physical interaction on-set.
Based on these seemingly fictitious conditions, and the variables of the director, TOHO representatives helming the principal aspects, american and japanese writers working together - Could a Godzilla movie work?
