Seeing as Destroy All Monsters took place in 1999, and the events of that movie were the last to occur in the Showa timeline, any future Godzilla movie that picked up on the Showa series and took place in the present day would be able to build on the premise that Godzilla and the other monsters are contained on Monster Island. Convenient, and not a bad idea, as it would mean that the existance of the kaiju and their motifs would all be pre-developed, and would leave room for introducing new characters (human and kaiju) and ideas.
I do like this idea, and would like to see it tried one day. My only complaint is that picking up on the Showa continuity would mean having Godzilla's status solidified as a superhero good monster. Don't get me wrong, I love the superhero Godzilla of the '70s, as both the character and the movies he appeared in hold great nostalgia to me. But that's really a thing of the past, you can't replicate it. The superhero Godzilla existed and worked in the '70s, I just don't think that he would work in any new movie. And besides, in the future, I want Godzilla to really return to his dark and evil roots, ala G84 and GMK.
GMK 2 directed by Shinji Higuchi. Now THAT's something I'd like to see!
