One time wonders from the '70's would be sufficient and deserve a second look: Hedorah, Megalon, or Titanosaurus.

The only repeat offender I'd really want to see is Angilas.
Heck do that. Angilas and Godzilla team up against another team.
Maybe one old foe one new one.

I'm always on the bring back showa characters bandwagon, but I'd actually like to see some of the Heisei one-offs get some new exposure. Battra and Destroyah could definitely use an update. They were both amazing concepts that suffered from terrible execution. Hell I'd even watch a new spacegodzilla flick.

I would love to see SpaceGodzilla again.

They'd have to think long and hard to bring back Space Godzilla in a way that doesn't seem like they'd repeating a lot of "Godzilla vs Space Godzilla". They'd have to re-invent the monster somewhat, something that's hard to do with a headlining one-off character like him. I just can't picture it. Even the idea of another type of "Godzilla vs Space Godzilla" movie (or Godzilla X Space Godzilla or whatever) just seems redundant.

"So what's the new Godzilla movie about?"
"Godzilla's fighting Space Godzilla again..."
"I...huh? What?"

I feel like everything has been done so everything at some point is going to sound like a rehash in the Godzilla universe. To each their own though. I hold no great attachment to Spacegodzilla other than wanting to see what he looks like with a more modern spfx type film. E.G. imagine Shinji Higuchi doing the spfx with crystals rupturing through buildings.

I agree that bringing back Spacegodzilla would be really hard, but I would don't mind a new backstory.

SpaceGodzilla has a lot of potential, It could be a kaiju created by *insert alien invaders name here* as a weapon, but ended turning against his creators.

Just imagine a monster that has the power to destroy entire worlds, imagine the planet being covered by crystals and some of them even having kaijus trapped on them.

I would love to see that with today's new special effect techniques.

Also, bring back Varan, the guy had never been given enough screentime since the 50's.

Do we WANT them to be? I think most of us would rather see Toho give other monsters the spotlight for now.

For the first movie in a (hopefully) new series? Give me a new kaiju. If they make more, I'd be happy to see some old ones return. I'd be a little disappointed if the first Toho film in over a decade was a rematch.

Both the Showa and Heisei Series kicked off with solo Godzilla films while the Millennium Series began with Godzilla battling Orga, an alien that tried to replicate Godzilla's form (and bore a striking resemblance to the Hollywood GINO from the year before). It would be unusual for Toho to start a new series by pitting Godzilla against a monster we've seen him fight before.

The Heisei and Millennium Series each got through two movies with just Godzilla and original kaiju before they took to reviving classic monsters like King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Mechagodzilla starting with their third entries. In that regard, the Legendary Series will actually become the quickest to trot out those staple characters... unless Toho preemptively breaks that record by putting one of them in their upcoming movie.

I'm assuming a director announcement should be on the horizon?

You know, I really want them to do a sequel to Tokyo SOS. The movie has the perfect ending that allows it to have a sequel that they must do one. Hell, they could easily have that the new Godzilla was created from the DNA they had stored in their labs.

Meh.

I mean, you could also just sorta take it as "Mankind will never learn."

AND since it's a post-credits scene, it's real easy to just ignore. I don't feel like there's some dangling thread that needs to be resolved.

I think it would be best for Toho to avoid any direct connections to the last two series of films.

Chances are history will again repeat itself.

So I'm going to be the negative Nancy here and throw my doubts at this movie...

Has there been any indication that they have been working on this movie or have some people just made that assumption because they made an announcement 2 years before release?

I see them doing the same old stuff not trying to push the envelope of practical effects and bang out a movie in 8 months hoping to get the cake G'14 did in Japan with some bonus money on overseas DVD/Streaming sales.
