Saw it again, with a Japanese friend who helped explain some of it afterwards. Key points:
- in the VERY beginning, the Coast Guard is looking in a boat, where they find glasses, shoes, and a suicide note. The note explains that the man's wife was killed from some type of nuclear something. This man also may or may not have created Godzilla.
- the red goo is Godzilla's blood.
- US, France, and other governments want to use nukes. Japan is opposed, so they come up with operation Deep Freeze as a last-ditch effort, as the nuclear countdown has already begun.
- they get a sample of Godzilla's blood, and through testing, create a chemical that can freeze it. That's the chemical they use on Godzilla at the end.
- they find one of Godzilla's spines, and discover that the cells are reproducing, and will continue to do so, and if so, that will "be the end of humanity".
- Godzilla may or may not be dead. He is certainly frozen, but it's not clear if he will unfreeze or not.
- my friend thinks that all the meetings, panels, paperwork, etc is a response to actual events in Japan in the last year about a change in certain governmental policies involving red tape.
