Kaijuden Monthly Art Challenge for August 2010: Clash of the Titans Free-for-All (deadline: September 3rd)

Well, unlike Gappa for June 2010, we only got a couple of Barugon pieces for July 2010...

I can't explain it, but with conventions everywhere, and July considered the last true month for summer vacation (August is the new September), many artists couldn't attend. However, for those of you have Barugon work in progress, message me with previews of your incomplete art before the weekend, and we'll each give you an extension until the 19th of September.

If I don't see anything however, we'll stick with the three we got and close the Barugon art jam for good.

BUT regardless of the fate of Barugon, we're going ahead with our 2010 August art jam, and boy is it a winner - a whole month dedicated to the 1981 and 2010 film versions of Clash of the Titans!

Yes, you guys never thought we'd be doing non-Japanese fantasy and giant monsters so soon, but the films of Ray Harryhausen, despite having greater popularity and supporters than the Japanese Monster Movie / Kaiju Eiga genre, lacks in the kind of nerd love Godzilla and cohorts always get, especially in the fan art department. And with the recent DVD release of the 2010 remake, what better time to celebrate these two films loosely based on the Greek myths of the hero Perseus, and his valiant rescuing of the princess Andromeda from sacrificial doom.

The deadline for our Clash of the Titans art jam is September 3rd, and artists are more than welcome to draw any of the following monsters from both film versions (image links included):

The Kraken - the climatic sea titan of both films, who contrary to popular belief, is a purely Ray Harryhausen created addition, as the original myth simply featured a generic sea dragon, and Harryhausen had done a dragon before in The 7th Voyage of Sinbad. While the name Kraken is borrowed from the giant octopuses of Norse mythology, though it should be noted that Ray Harryhausen had also tackled a real Kraken in It Came from Beneath the Sea, as contrary to further popular belief, the octopus of that film was not an atomic mutation, but the legendary monster disturbed by atomic tests. Trust me, watch It Came from Beneath the Sea again for that surprise tidbit of exposition.

Giant Scorpions and the Scorpinochs - oversized scorpions born from the blood of Medusa in the 1981 film, while in the 2010 remake they originated from the severed hand Calibos. The remake's giant scorpions were also renamed Scorpinoachs, and made far bigger than their Harryhausen counterparts.

The Vulture - the giant pet and faithful 'bird of burden' for the villainous Calibos, who's main duty was in transporting an hypnotized Andromeda within a golden cage to its master's swampy domain every night (seen only in the 1981 original).

Dioskilos - inspired by the three-headed dog of Hades, Cerberus, Dioskilos in an otherwise original character from the 1981 film, a sort of 'Cerberus-Light' with only two-heads (easier for Ray to realistically animate), and who tenaciously guards the temple entrance of Medusa.

Medusa - You can't have a Clash of the Titans art jam without any love for this terrifying serpentine lady, who true to the Penguin, huh, I mean Burgess Meredith description, is in reality a tragic and far gone victim of the petty Gods. Ray Harryhausen went to town making his Medua believable enough to turn hapless people to stone, while the 2010 remake Medusa is a little too sleek and sexy for her own good. Either way, you're welcome to draw both snake girls, as long as its from either of these said films, and no where else.

Calibos - another human cursed and transformed by the wrathful Gods...though in this case, he kind of deserved it. In the 2010 remake, Calibos demonic features were abandon for a more 'burned-by-lighting' deformed look, and given a closer connection to Perseus himself, as Acrisius; the hateful man who would have been his father, had Zeua not seduced his beloved Danae. Again, either film version of the character will do.

Pegasus - the last surviving member of a race of flying horses; victims of over hunting from a then human Calibos (see, we said he deserved it). After being captured and briefly tamed, Pegasus becomes a valuable ally to Perseus in his final confrontation with the Kraken. In the 2010 film, Pegasus was repainted black, because I guess white isn't manly enough for modern moviegoers...and jaded fools!

Djinn - exclusively created for the 2010 remake, these fearsome spirit beings are mystical nomads across ancient world, and who help our heroes first by taming the Scorpinochs, and later with Medusa, who's deadly glare had little effect on these strange non-humans.

Stygian Witches - Three cannibalistic hags in a cave, that share a single glass eye among themselves (to call them blind would be an understatement), who reluctantly share knowledge with Perseus on how to defeat the kraken with the use of Medusa's severed head and its still potent stare. The three returned in the 2010 remake, but given more monstrous forms, yet lacking their unpleasant culinary tastes.

Winged Demons - often referred to as Harpies, despite being more bat-like than avian, these dark minions burst forth from the body of Hades at his command in the 2010 remake.

Bubo - yes...him! Bubo also had a very brief (slightly unflattering) cameo in the 2010 remake:

Some Rules To Go Over (Please Read):

#1 - Artwork must be original and new, or at least has never been posted on Deviant Art before. And please no altered screen captures or similar images that are clearly not of your own doing.

#2 - Illustrations will be chosen based on skill and how well they capture the spirit and personality of the month's subject, so it's probably best to give your pictures your best efforts, like being fully colored or at least with strong black-and-white inks. No simple pencil sketches please, however clay and paper sculptures, along with related photography are also allowed and welcomed.

#3 - You are more than welcome to do a re-designs (both subtle and radical) of the various Clash of the Titans characters, as long as its obvious who the character is, and that its still Clash of the Titans - No robot clones or completely original characters with distant / vague connections to the original subject. You are more than welcome to do cute / chibi / 'super-deformed' cartoon versions of the said characters though.

#4 - Since this art jam is based on the 1981 and 2010 movies, and NOT the myths that inspired them, please submit all <i>Clash of the Titans</i> art to the American Kaiju section, or to the Fan-Edited Kaiju if their re-designs.

#5 - No extreme violence, nudity, or gore...we don't mind a darker, or more nightmarish / bleaker take on Clash of the Titans, just as long as its in some good taste. If you want to do a Kaiju Girl (sexy anthropomorphic) version of the various monster (though best you don't), it would be better for groups like and thus will have little merit to our monthly art jams. And please, no nipples or other overt sexually crudeness / pornography...again, all in good taste.

Kaijuden Monthly Art Challenge For May 2011: Jiger (Ends June 5th, 2011)

For May 2011, we get back to more traditional Japanese monster fair, with one of Gamera's lesser known enemies - a nasty foreign demon she-beast who also has the distinct position of once knocking up the fire-breathing male turtle...WAAAHHHTTT?!?!

Jiger, also known as the original Monster X, made her first appearance in "Gamera vs. Jiger" (1970), and like past fiend Barugon, was an evil demon from a tropical land, foolishly awakened by Japanese visitors, and afterwards makes a B-line for the 1970 World's Fair, in Osaka.

Gamera attempts to stop Jiger, but upon the second round, Jiger injects a blood-sucking baby into the unfortunate chelonian, with her stinger-like ovipositor tail. Comatose and loosing blood quick, Gamera lays helpless until two brave boy scouts (we're not kidding) manned a miniature submarine into the heroic monster, in order to get rid of the Baby Jiger from within.

Some Rules You Go Over:

#1 - All entries must be original works of art, or at the very least have not been posted on DeviantART before.

#2 - Fan Edited-style redesigns and even original characters are okay, just as long as they are obviously based no the art jam's featured theme (Jiger).

#3 - No graphic violence, gore, or equally extreme nudity and sex...even if we are dealing with demonic ovipositors and what not this time around.

The Jiger art jam ends June 5th, and good luck everyone, can't wait to see your guy's rendition of Jiger.
