Godzilla: Age of Monsters. Fiction Preview and Prolouge.

It had been a slow week. Heck, it had been a slow month. And Shinjo Ikarus was getting quite bored. He yawned and stretched lazily, glancing out the main veiwport with disintrest. Nothing exciting ever happened, not since that last run in with the shrimp. Ebirah, he thought they named it, but he could be wrong. He had been before. It didn't really matter.
The soft hum of the main engine almost lulled him to sleep again. He'd only gotten up three hours ago, and that was late. RDU captains got little rest. Then again, it's easy to sleep when nothing is happening.
Of course, Jackson and Ryo were babble exitedly over some new discovery or another. As far as Shinjo could tell, that was their job, to babble. His resident biologist spent all their times hovering over microscopes, grinning like idiots as they disected an unfortunate new species of fish that had been caught. The ship had tanks full of specimens they had collected, but that was the curse of having your ship half-funded by the worlds scientific community.
And if it wasn't the scientists, it was those damn military asses from above. Aproximatly three hours every day was spent explaining to the gods above that no, they had NOT run into anything yet. At least nothing important, that is.
Of course, Shinjo had bigger fish to fry, quite literally. This was his ship, and most importantly, his mission. The scientists, the fancy military arms, and the RDU logo were little more then a cover for his real objective. Revenge.
Not against any one person mind you, but at a creature. At creature that had taken the love of his life, and youngest daughter from him.
The seas wern't what they used to be. In the late 20th century, man had ruled the ocean unquestionably. It was the height of human civilization, or at least the height that it was ever going to reach now. Because something had changed.
There was no one cause, except maybe the all-encompassing idea of mans stupidity and selfishness. But almost overnight it seemed, Earth had gone to hell. They were warned in the 50s. People had said it was a fluke, and that the beasts would never come again.
They were wrong.
It began again in 1984. Then in 98. 2000. And since then, more and more of the monsters came, to the point where it was nearly commonplace. There had been war, and from that war even more came. And now man no longer ruled the planet. They just lived and waited, praying each day that it would not be the day of another monster.
Ebirah had been such a monster. A great shrimp like creature, nearly 40 meters long. Marvelous specimen really. It had attacked without a second thought.
Fortunatly, Shinjo was in the seas for that very reason. His ship was called the Atragon, a great weapon designed to fight these Kaiju, as they had been named. Armed with the most advanced weapons in the world, the gigantic shrimp had been no match, and it had fled into deeper waters.
Shinjo's superiors had demanded he give chase, but he figured that Ebirah had enough. But there was one he would not let go, a great dragon named Manda. It was Manda that had stolen his family from him, and it was Manda that he was down here, several miles under the ocean to fight.
The Atragon was a marvlous vessel, one of twelve, each given a region of the Earth to protect. Atragon was one of the first, and the most versatile. Not only could it navigate the great depths, but it could fly, trundle along the ground on great treads, and burrow via a huge drill that made up the vessels nose. Not just that, its arnaments were the very latest in kaiju fighting technology. Mounted atop were missiles that could peirce the strongest armor, diamond tipped harpoons capable of delivering electrical shocks of millions of volts, and no less then 6 maser-class beam weapons. It was truly marvolous. And it was Shinjos.
"Sir?"
"Yes?" He yawned. English was a difficult language to learn, and downright impossible to master. But the Americans, who had paid for a good 75% of his vessel, demanded it be spoken whenever possible. Silly Americans. You never saw the Japanese demanding people to speak their language. He glanced at his first officer, who saluted sharply. He raised an eyebrow at her tight uniform, wondering exactly why the gods had chosen to tempt him with this lovely lady as his first officer.
"Sonar reports something aproaching the starboard bow." Ren answered, her face expressionless as always. "LT. Rogers wishes to show you."
Shinjo stretched, then pushed himself out of the captains chair, following her. he couldn't help but notice her dress seemed a little shorter then regulation size. He shook his head quickly, and tried to ignore it.
"What do you see Rogers?" He asked, glancing at the sonar screen.
"Gone now." Rogers reported, furoughing his brow and frowning. "For a minute there was something big below us."
"How big?"
"Really big. Sir."
Shinjo sighed. "Keep an eye on it Lt. Inform me if-"
"Sir..." Ren whispered. "Its back."
Shinjo glanced back, and his jaw dropped.
"Size estimate, quick. Get some cameras on it, I want a positive ID asap."
"Really really big." Rogers paled. "And it's coming straight at is."
Damn. Just like those bad movies. Sinjo shook his head and ran backwards. "Prepare for evasive action if it gets too close. Is it Manda?"
"Not sure. Getting ID now."
"Sir, getting audio!" Another Leutinent yelled.
"Grab that Leutenant!" Shinjo called back.
Then there was a sudden tremble, and the ship was pushed on its side as something massive swam past, heading to the surface. Then it was gone.
"The hell was that?" Shinjo demanded.
"We were unable to get a visual ID." Ren reported.
"Then what-"
"Sir.... I got the audio." The LT. reported meekly. Shinjo glanced back at him. His face was white.
"Play it."
The Lt followed order, and for a breath moment, an angry, almost musical howl filled the cabin. Shinjo glanced at his crew. They were ashen.
He closed his eyes for a long moment, before speaking. "Communications, radio home. Tell them, Godzilla has returned."
As his orders were carried out, he collapsed back into his chair. Things were about to get very interesting indeed...

Some project notes to show you what's coming:

Regional Defense Units:
The Regional Defense Units (RDU's) were established and constructed during the period between the death of the Super X, and the completion of project Phroureo. Started soon after the completion of Super X, they are designed to keep Kaiju at bay, but not for heavy combat with the stronger monsters. In addition to their primary weapon, all are armed with multiple maser beams, and many diffrent types of missiles. Their captains are the best the world has to offer, their crew (average 200) are the bravest souls on Earth. The first war machines designed specifically to fight Kaiju.

Atragon: Pacific Ocean - Great Drill - Captain: Shinjo Akaris
The Atragon was the second RDU completed, and many say the most powerful, though a lot of praise is due to its fearless captain. The Atragon is also one of the only four equiped with a science lab, and of those, has certainly proved the most useful with the research its dedicated scientists provide. Its drill tip makes it the most versatile of them, able to go underground, in water, and in the sky. Shinjo Akaris is the ships gruff captain, who runs the craft with optimum effeciency.
Karyu: Russia - Energy Blade - Captain: Borisko Siboda
Russias protector has the most unusual of the weapons. Designed for high speed swoops, the Karyu uses its energy blade as a sword that can penetrate even the toughest armor. Borisko Siboda is a gung-ho man with warriors blood in his vain. Unlike the other captains, his primary method is a strong offensive attack, designed to send any Kaiju running. So far, his attacks have had unprecidented success, even sending Anguirus fleeing for its life. His is the most celebrated of the RDU's.
Eclair: France/Europe - Spheroidal Maser Energy Generator - Captain: Amelie Barret
The Eclair is charged with defending most of Europe, though it is stationed in France. Its Spheroidal Maser Energy Generator creats lightning like attacks that are very effective. Amelie Barret has a commanding presence, despite her small stature. That doesn't bother her though. She is a master stratigist. Her attacks are designed to confuse, and the lure away attacking monsters.
Ma'At: Egyp/Middle Eastt - Gatling Cannon - Captain: Kafele Fenyang
The Ma'At is a rather unusual craft. Kafele demanded that most weapons be stripped down. It only has one pair of masers, and one pair of missile racks. The loss of weight was put toward engine use, making the Ma'At the fastest of all the crafts. Not only is its movement speed unmatched, so is its weapons firing rate, sending thousands of powerful shells into any target. Kafele was a general in the Egyptian Army before stepping up to take command of the Ma'At, and he takes no nonsense.
Lone Tiger: Southern Africa - Dual Energy Converters - Captain: Paki Takiyah
The Lone Tiger twin energy converters can be fired seperatly, or charged up to make one full, devestating blast. Paki Takiyah knows the area his ship protects is vast, and the thought that he cannot cover all of it at once saddens him. However, he does his very best to protect the nations under his care not just from Kaiju, but from other dangers and strife as well. This has gotten him into political trouble on occasion, for his willingness to interfere in local matters. Howeer, he is only doing what he feels is right.
Solon : Atlantic Ocean - Hurricain Generator - Captain: Erik Pratchet
The British born Erik Pratchet commands his ship like an exploring vessel of old. He is home on the ocean, and so is his ship. Like the Atragon, the Solon serves a dual purpose as protector and explorer, with scientific instruments designed to map out the ocean floor to a degree never seen before, in addition to unmatched biological labs. Like the Ma'At, the Solon has also sacrificed many weapons, in their place putting the most advanced scientific instruments available. The Hurricain Generator on its front can create winds that would blow even Rodan out of the sky- or so Erik claims.
Rumbling: Central US - Magna Maser Cannon - Captain: Jefferson Williams
Jefferson Williams loves pushing the limits of his vehicle, performing maneuvers that the other captains would deem suicidal. All the Rumblings standard weapons have been scrapped and replaced with newer, faster firing models, making the Rumbling the superior in fire power of any of the ships. Jefferson even went to great lengths to add extra weapons on the hulls underside. As a result, the maneuverability and speed of the ship has suffered, but that doesn't bother Williams.
Caipora: South America - Spread of Flames - Captain: Ana Andira
Ana is legendary for her effeciency, and even moreso for the destruction her craft causes. Ana's philosphy is 'if the beam is big enough, you can't miss.' That's why she opted to take control of a gigantice flamethrower, capable of blanketing an entire area in incinerating flame. As her viscious, brutal attacks do as much harm as good, her higher-ups are reluctant to call her into battle. Despite this, she has an excelent track record. She is held as soley responsible for killing off no less then 6 unusually large Kamacurus that fled Africa and migrated to Chile.
Great Whale: Antartica - Refraction Cannon - Captain: Mark Tallet
The Great Whale was actually comissioned long before the RDU was even thought up. In fact, it is also the 'base' design for all the other RDU's. This made it easy for modification, and it was the first completed, and served for a short while in America before being reassigned to Antartica, which it was originally constructed for. Like the Solon and the Atragon, the Great Whale is a scientific vessel. In fact, it is also the lightest armed of the twelve. Its primary Weapon is designed purly for defensive purposes. It takes in energy, and is able to redirect it at the source of that energy. Captain Tallet is an American military man who left the army to became a scientist. When the opportunity to serve both his country and his field arose, he gladly took the opportunity.
Kivioq: Northern Canada - Crystal Maser - Captain: Eva Sataa
The Kivioq has a broad territory to protect, covering the North pole, and many of the other northern areas of the world. That suits Eva just fine. An explorer at heart, she loves the thrill of discovery. While her vessel is not designed for scientific purposes, she still managed to allow into the budget a small lab and map station. Few kaiju attack her area, so she spends much of her time mapping the area, and doing geological surveys. Its not duty that drives her, but rather the spirit of adventure. The Crystal Maser is a weaker version of the Absolute Zero cannon, covering its target in a barrier of ice.
Guruwari: Austrailia - Rail Cannon - Captain: Raelene King
The Guruwari has the most powerful mounted weapon, which is capable of obliterationg most anything that is thrown at it. However, the weapon is clunky, hard to aim, and has a ridicously slow recharge rate. This thought ways heavily on its captain, Rarelene King, whos done everything to make her ship more effective. But every modification had the same result: The Rail Gun simply was not effective. After a nearly disasterous engagement with Godzilla, Raelene has scaled back the use of her primary weapon, and instead has found creative new ways to use her weaker secondary weapons. This creativity, and the effectiveness of it, has made her a celebrated hero in her home Country, and a respected commander worldwide.
Hephatus: Orbital Defense - Diminsion Tide - Captain: Pavel Royark, and Joseph Hopkins
The Hephatus is the most unusual of the craft, because unlike the others, it is stationed orbiting the Earth. While it can move under its own power its captains opt to keep it in one place. It is also the largest of the ships, but for a good reason: Its secondary function is that of the internation space station. While it still retains the basic body shape, there have been many attachments, mostly scientific in nature. Pavel and Joseph are a team of scientists, Pavel from Russian, and Joseph from America, that had worked together for years, and were happy to be stationed in space. The Diminsion Tide is not a very powerful weapon. It is, however, the most accurate. Even from space, it can hit a target the size of a dime with a peircing laser. The Diminsion Tide's uses range from drilling to Kaiju defense. Many kaiju have been detered by a single shot from space, though it has yet to kill, or even seriously injure, even one. Its captains are working on a rework of the Diminsion Tide that would cause it to fire a minature, temporary black hole. Internation efforts and common sense are against them however.

Timeline:
1933: King Kong is taken to New York, then killed.
1954: Godzilla attacks for the first time. He is killed by the use of an oxygen destroyer, whos creator dies along with his secret.
1956 - A second Godzilla is found battleing a creature named Anguirus. After killing Anguirus, Godzilla vanishes into an Ice Berg.
1958+ Over the next few years, several monsters including Rodan and Varan attack, but then all goes quiet. Beleiving it to be merely a fluke, the world takes rest.
1984: G returns, then vannishs into a crater
1998: A giant Iguana attacks New York, and is mistaken for Godzilla. After the creatures death, it is post-humously renamed Zilla, though rumors of a second creature survive.
2005: Godzilla returns again, and attacks Japan a fourth time. There are thousands of casulties. Godzilla returns to the ocean unharmed.
2007: A second Oxygen Destroyer is created to stop Godzilla, but is accidently released on land, turning a portion of the US Midwest into a wasteland
2008-2010: War breaks out between China and US over the re-invention of the Oxygen Destroyer. China is defeated, but much of US army power is destroyed.
2009: During US/China war, a second Anguirus attacks Europe, causing great damage in France. Angered by a German counterattack, Berlin is also destroyed. During the chaos, Brittain is hit by a large terrorist attack involving nuclear and biological weapons. Many claim it is the end of the world.
2010: At end of China/US war, new attempt at a world government is formed- a more solidified version of the United Nations, but many nations outright reject, or otherwise ignore it.
2011: First major undertaking of the new UN occurs when Godzila again attacks Japan, followed by a rampage of a giant bird in Chicago. The UN proposes a task force to destroy all Kaiju, named G-Force by the US President. Manda attacks China.
2014: Super X is completed, and attacks Godzilla. It fails misearbly. A swarm of thousands of Kamucurus attack Africa.
2018: New proposal is drafted: Fight Kaiju with Kaiju. Three mechanical Kaiju are designed and construction begins. To defend Earth during construction time, the Regional Defense Units, 12 vehicles modeled after the explorer ship Great Whale are established, each given their own area of the globe to protect...
