Just finished watching this and this film is a mixed bag. The first 40 minutes or so of the film is one of the dullest films I've ever seen and I've seen a lot of 1950s schlock. Its so painful it hurts. However about a 1/3rd of the way in the scorpion makes an appearance and things quickly pick up. When they go to the cavern there are a bunch of delightful creatures and it really does feel like something out of a King Kong film, The scorpions really shine for the most part. The stop motion is top notch butch the big props for closeups are incredibly goofy. For closeups they use a dolly zoom to make it look like the prop is advancing and its utterly non-convincing. The final rampage though is awesome. You have scorpions vs trains, other scorpions and a giant battle royale in a stadium against tanks and helicopters. I really can't describe how well the stop motion actions scenes are and so it baffles me as to why the filmmakers went with such a terrible studio prop for closeups. Also the military guy manning the electric harpoon in the finale has one of the funniest deaths I've ever seen in a science fiction movie. I literally facepalmed while saying "IDIOT!"
Final review, C+ If you can survive the first third of the film, it goes from dull slowpaced garbage to awesome fastpaced action movie.
