Godzilla/Kaiju movies on Svengoolie...

Postby lhb412 » Sat Jan 04, 2014 11:21 pm

(Editor's note: this thread was initially about King Kong Escapes being shown on Svengoolie)

... right now! That is: Jan 4th on ME TV.

--EDIT--

And the Svengoolie website hints towards KK vs. G airing next month.

UGH, I missed it :(
I've not seen KKE on tv since the 90s.

^Wait a year or two and I'm sure Sven will show it again. His show now exclusively shows stuff from the Universal library, so: classic Universal horror, Universal sci-fi flicks from the '50s, the 8 Hammer films Uni has the rights to, and the two Toho films Uni has the rights to (KKE and KKvG).

Definitely the best single company's library to be working from when putting on an old-fashioned horror host show!

I think he played it about 6 months ago. The movie was chopped to bits but the print was beautiful.

It's about the experience of seeing it on TV with a genuine horror host cracking jokes before each commercial break. No one is expecting to see the definitive presentation of the movie. Jeez.

Yeah, I've been watching Svengoolie for about 2 years now. It took me a while to warm up to him, but now, I really, really enjoy seeing his show every Saturday night. Sure, I've seen most of the movies he plays, so I'm not missing anything. And, those movies I haven't seen, I probably never would have sought out, so it is nice to be introduced to a few new old movies every now and then :)

I'm looking forward to his cheesy jokes this week for King Kong vs. Godzilla :D

Man, watching this right now reminds me of why I love King Kong Escapes: it starts out insane, then keeps topping itself!

Holy mackerel! Svengoolie is showing Godzilla, King of the Monsters! February 4th! Apparently he's teased more Godzilla being added to his lineup, so maybe we can look forward to the other ones in Classic Media's library (and, I may add, they also have Rodan and Gargantuas).

It's great to see him show another kaiju movie and expand his movie lineup beyond the Universal library he's been largely confined to. I mean, it's the best movie library to be working from for a show like this, but you can only show Bride of Frankenstein so many times and once you've aired the Inner Sanctum movies more than once maybe it's time to start knocking on other doors, right?

I know El Ray shows both CM and Sony Godzilla movies, but which ones does Comet TV have access to?

From Sven's blog post a few weeks ago, addressing his showing Black Friday again after only four months or so:

I’ve been trying to space out reshowings of films, putting a couple years between as many of them as we can- and, as you loyal viewers know- we try to add in new segments whenever we have enough production time to do so. ( Our broadcast company has a lot going on here, with other networks and our local stations- and we can’t always get the extra studio time.) We must repeat films because- well, that’s all Universal will give us. Yes, we are working on getting additional films from other sources – the upcoming Godzilla movies are part of that plan.

HAPPY DANCE!

February is a moth of Godzilla movies on Svengoolie! Grab your popcorn and hunker down for some good, old-fashioned horror hosting!

http://svengoolie.com/?p=13178

February 4: Godzilla, King of the Monsters!
February 11: Godzilla Raids Again
February 18: Mothra vs. Godzilla
February 25: Godzilla's Revenge

... there's five more movies in Classic Media's library. I wonder if another month of kaiju movies is planned for this year?

I'm unreasonably excited for this. This is as close as I'll ever get to being in the '70s and watching Creature Features or those various other monster movie shows.

Ha, Sven had some trouble with the Japanese names... well, not exactly trouble, but they slowed him down and he got 'em mostly correct when giving out the trivia. He talked about how Burr was inserted into the movie as well as the inspiration behind the Japanese original. The best part of it was the ending: Sven showed the last scene from the Japanese version (Yamane's warning about future monsters created by nuclear tests) and contrasted it with the more upbeat ending of the US version.
