This year i took a ton of video.... and not a lot of pictures.. but heres my recap with a couple pictures
Godzilla vs Wolfman was incredible. It was a classic Hammer film meets a Showa Godzilla film. In a word
awesome. They showed us a 22 minute cut and allowed us to record it under the promise that we DO NOT post it anywhere online. The director is currently in talks with Toho to do a limited direct DVD release and if it shows up online that would pretty much kill those discussions.
I got Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla signed by both of the main guests, got my picture taken with them and got a picture of me arm-wrestling Robert Scott Field
Cleve Hall was all over the place in his panel... dropped a lot of F-bombs and had a couple gore shots in the mix, so probably the least "family friendly" part of the convention. He did say that he is
currently working on a 13 episode tokusatsu series reminiscent of Ultraman... That will probably be on Fear.Net..or was it Chiller?... Did I mention he was all over the place? If you arent familiar with his work check out the DEVO music video "Monster Man" which features a kaiju fighting DevoMan. I really wasnt familiar with much of his work...except for Senor Donut from the movie "Sex Drive"
The Pacific Rim premiere was great, lots of good energy and it seemed like 80% of the fans loved it. KiryuGoji04 went full Peewee Herman in the theater, which was a bit awkward for the rest of us.
I walked out of the Pacific Rim reaction panel after listening to one of the panel leaders $h1t all over the movie with criticisms like "the CG wasn't that great" and "kaiju all looked the same"... apparently the conversation got better as the crowd joined in, but there was enough other things to check out that i felt like that panel was awful.
Wakasa was interesting. Someone asked him about the Burning Goji suit, which was built by a competitor... which was funny interaction. There was a lot of talk about the Mothra films and how Toho (doesn't) handle the suits after filming.
Kitagawa was a lot shorter than i thought.. so when i say I met Godzilla and he was a lot shorter than i imagined, i am being serious. He was very animated.
The IDW comic Rulers of Earth series is confirmed for 8 issues (this occurred during the show, at the beginning they were only confirmed for 5).. i actually talked a lot with the various IDW guys so there is a full post on that in the comics thread.
I missed the 50th anniversary of Matango panel due to waiting for signatures so that was the one thing i wish i could have seen that i didnt.
SpaceGodzilla has officially dropped to last place in my ranking of Godzilla films...
Legendary donated a bunch of shirts and a big Pacific Rim prize pack ( a large PR branded ammo box full of toys, shirts water bottles, etc) The winner offered to let it be auctioned off for charity and someone got it for $230.
I was hoping to run into some people from the boards, but only ran into TripMasterMunkey and the Lobsterdance crew... i even asked some random guy that was with a lady if he was MekaGojira3k.... he wasn't and the exchange was about as awkward as that time i told MekaGojira3k that he was a lovely looking lady... which apparently he is not... although i still haven't been able to confirm that in person.
The dealers room... ::swoon::
Since this was the 20 year anniversary this year the Baker guys made a G-Fantis suit for JD as a gift... it was pretty awesome, probably their best suit so far, the detail was gorgeous.
Saw a rough cut of Ultraman Sorta vs Godzilla Starring Matt Frank the Movie. It was pretty great, cant wait to see the finished product. Also Jarred finally succeeded in hyping NIVIS EX MACHINA to the point where i want to see that one as well.
I'm sure there was a ton of other stuff i am forgetting.. it was awesome. Already looking forward to next year.
