So I sat down this afternoon to watch the poll’s winner before the next poll ended. I have the Classics Media dvd which is just a fantastic release, as are all their other Godzilla releases. The other movies in the poll do not have anything released domestically that comes anywhere close. Japanese and American releases, subtitles, audio commentary, and an Ishiro Honda biography among other features are on a single dvd with an excellent transfer. While I was writing this up, I had the American release with the audio commentary playing, and its looking to me like the Japanese version has a MUCH nicer transfer.
I realized despite seeing this dvd a number of times, and an incredible number of times on tv when I was little, I had never watched it in Japanese with subtitles. The soundtrack is in stereo, which I had my receiver 5 channel enhance, which did a nice job. This is one of those movies that was on all the time when I was a kid. I used to be bummed out that it wasn’t one of the other movies, but would dutifully watch it anyway.
Ahh, the opening music. Gotta love it! Kinda weird that they spoil Gabara in the opening montage credits, but its jam packed with Godzilla and friends goodness.
We were joking that this poll was a list of terrible kaiju movies with Godzilla’s Revenge being the less terrible of the lot. Honestly, after watching this again, my opinion of it continues to improve. This is a good kids’ movie that is very well told.
What’s the joke with the toy hand yelling for the police? I don’t quite get it.
Getting to the Godzilla scenes, there’s actually a fair amount despite the movie not really being about kaiju. Even for having so much footage from other movies, they at least have pulled some of the good fight scenes. The new footage looks pretty nice too. The G suit looks better than it did in Sea Monster, imo, and I am definitely a fan of Gabara. Love that distinctive roar and the electric power!
See, MekaGojira3k! Minya, the Zoolander of kaiju, can also look shocked!
Aaah, as I listen to the commentary they make mention that the toy maker is Dr Who from King Kong Escapes!
Someone on the forum was trying to list all the Godzilla toys shown in all the Godzilla movies. Not sure if it was mentioned or not, but there’s a Bullmark Godzilla in the cupboard where Ichijo keeps his dream radio.
Admit it people, this poll didn’t turn out as badly as we thought it might. Although Jimmy might think otherwise.
“All right, baby!â€
