I only just skimmed that review, but it seems like that's about what I've heard from people. Die-hard fans will get some fun from how much like a GODZILLA MOVIE it feels, but as a game unto itself it's pretty darn weak and clumsy with little replay value.

Ok so I have played through this game many times over and have almost gotten all of the monsters to their max level. So I figure I'd give you guys some tips for the game's campaign, mainly the invade mode with the various kaiju, so if you would like please ask me any question about leveling up your monster through invade mode, I'll try to give you some pointers if you are getting stuck.

Yeah, I ended up trading the game in today. The online play was very glitchy and while I liked the game, it didn't keep my attention long enough.

As a Godzilla fan, I'd probably give this game a 7/10.

As a non-fan, it's probably a 5/10. Maybe a 6. I can also see how other people would give it a far lower score given the issues and a lack of balance.

Late reply.
Had a big test at the end of July and when I came back my roomate had a ps4.
I bought it from best buy and though it had 59.99 listed under it, it sold for $30 (or was it $39.99?).
Either they screwed up or there's been a reduction in price recently.
I'm barely in the game yet and work and life have been hectic. I just beat hedorah last time I played but here are my impressions so far

likes:
The music. I haven't heard Godzilla's theme in a game since monster of monsters in the 80s and even then I think it was only the JP version that had it. (The us intro was more of a variation and they replaced monster zero March though I liked the theme they used)

The tutorial. Even though its Hesei goji, the b&w was a nice touch.

The dual language. Turn on japanese with or without english subtitles.

The story- having an easy, medium or hard PM depending on the stage and how much destruction you cause is kinda cool. The easy ones dialogue about him being a being of earth and like a dog is funny as hell. Need I mention that they're all Toho actors in that role in godzilla films- a nice touch.

The kaiju- a great roster and the best graphics in a Godzilla game thus far.

The growth factor- cool concept. I wanted to try something like it, only wih the breath.

Dislikes:
The gameplay- this is a big one but the controls suck. If I could enjoy dragonball gt final bout on psx in the 90s for days on end (one of the worst reviewed fighting games for its controls which I feel just had a high learning curve) then I can tolerate a lot. Granted it's not as simple a fighting game as say Tekken, which I have enjoyed since the mid 90s. But there is no reason why the right joystick should be stuck as the camera in all control modes. An easy fix would have been to have a button to toggle between different camera modes, and/or if you hold that button and move the right joystick it will change camera angles, but having it stuck as the camera as you're movig around is just dumb and counter intuitive. Am I really going to want to change the camera angle as I'm attempting to strafe and move around in the middle of the fight? No, I probably want it stuck behind goji or at least in a consistent place, and the ability to use the right joystick to change the direction he himself is facing, not the flipping camera. That one change would make a world of difference. I wonder if it could be edited in downloadable update. If not its just a frustrating example of what turned a potentially great game to %#^* for any casual gamers and it's so simple a change. I have to wonder if the developers ever vetted it themselves.

The single local player aspect- this is the next gen of gaming a most annoying feature. No more split screen racing games. I hope this trend doesn't continue with fighting games. Call me old fashioned but I liked as a kid being able to have company and play against them or my siblings. My girlfriend will even game with me if I have something wih multiplayer save madden. It would have been cool. I need to try the online.

That's really it for now.
Any other ps4 owners? Can we play online across platforms? Should we share user names here to field a community of gamers there? Maybe there already is one and I missed it.

Is this game going to get a PS3 release in North America, or is it destined to remain a PS4 exclusive on these shores?

Ok so I finally got all of the kaiju upgraded and all of the figures, I have reached all of the achievements so here is a run down of tips for each monster to help you on both fighting other monsters and completing Invade and Defend campaigns...
Ok first off if you want to complete all the evolution for the monsters in Invade, you want to complete as many bonus objectives as possible, have destroyed the city as much as possible, and grow as much as possible; this will give you more evolution points toward your character, the more points the easier it is to evolve your character.
Ok for the characters themselves here are some tips for you...
Anguirus: this character isn't too bad in Invade, to get around faster use X to do the leap back attack, an added bonus is if you are tall enough you can cover over buildings making your fury meter go up in a hurry. In combat you have some advantages, for instance, Roar + Triangle causes you to be temporary invincible for the animation, this invinciblity also works when doing Roar + Circle to do the Ball roll as well

Battra (Larva): This character is great for chaining combos for both enemies and against buildings, using your Emergency Dodge Attack on the Generator is a great way to take it down fast. Another tip is that his Horn Prism Beam is good, but has short range.

Battra (Imago): This form is another on that is great at chaining combos together, however since he is airborne you will have a very hard time destroying smaller buildings, but keep at it, destroying as many buildings and military vehicles as possible helps your fury meter and your growth, try pick areas that have large and densely populated builds to do as much damage as possible, as far as enemies go, try to back them into a corner and unload your Emergency Dodge Attack on them, it will deplete their health very fast.

Biollante: Ok this kaiju is very fun and easy do play in Invade mode. Hands down you will not have an easier time destroying the city with any other Kaiju. Use X to charge toward and buildings her reach is amazing and can take an entire city block, combo this with her Emergency Dodge Attack and you can destroy the city in no time. This character as many of you know is one of the most OP characters in the game when facing another monster, don't forget to use Up + Triangle to use the Vine Shoot attack, it also has an impressive range too.

Haven't checked my friends ps4 yet since I haven't been back there but the PS3 version is on Sale on the Playstation network until November 30th.

$10! No excuse not to get it if you're interested.

Did I hear correctly this version lets you play your own soundtrack in the game unlike ps4?

For $12, I'd say I got my money's worth, but the lack of content really hurts it. I liked changing the music to metal songs and some tracks from Guilty Gear XX and Gundam Wing. The Diorama mode was okay to play around in, too. But I can only kick Jet Jaguar in the knees so many times before it feels empty. The PS3 got the short end of the stick. Of course, most of you know these things. I just felt the need to vent a little.

I got a PS4 for Christmas, and this was one of the games I got for it. I LOVE it! Easily the best Godzilla game ever. I can see why gamers who aren't Godzilla fans might not have loved it, but for a diehard Godzilla fan this game is tremendously fun! And I actually like the "tank" controls. It makes the monsters feel like massive, unstoppable juggernauts - as they should! Can't wait to finish unlocking everything (I've got about 2/3 of the cast unlocked but not really any of the upgrades yet). I seem to remember somewhere further back in this thread a guide detailing how to get everything so I might have to re-read that...

So with all the recent Godzilla hype and everything that's been going on lately I felt the urge to go back and play this game again. I've been trying out some of the monsters I never got round to trying (the grinding just wore me down before I made my way through the entire roster when I first played it), and a few days ago I fired up the multiplayer fully expecting to get no results whatsoever.

To my surprise though, without having to wait for hardly any amount of time at all I got into several matches, both 2 and 3 player. I guess there are several other people feeling the urge to revisit it at the moment too, or play it for the first time, since I kept alternating between people of very high ranks (a couple had literally over 1000 wins!) and rank 1 players who'd clearly only just bought the game.

Of course I was then immediately reminded of all the ways the multiplayer is broken, but at least it seems like there's still a small but active community playing online, at least for the moment anyway. :P

Short of donning a monster suit and stomping around a miniature city set, this game is the most authentic possible way to simulate the experience of being Godzilla and his kaiju co-stars as they appear in the movies. It's not a very complex game and it's definitely not made for general gamers but for G fans this is like a dream come true. There's a tremendous amount of love and respect for the 60-year history of the series on full display in this game. The monster designs are spot-on accurate. (It's got Mechagodzilla '74 and '75 and they nailed all of the little differences between them!) There are so many sound effects that are straight from the films and I particularly like how they included so many of the different foot stomps that the monsters make. I also love how all of the lights in the buildings' windows flicker before they explode, just like how Koichi Kawakita did it in the Heisei Series. It's a true Godzilla simulator.

The game isn't much more complex than the Pipeworks games, unfortunately, but like those games, there's plenty of replay value if you're a fan of what it has to offer. I had all of the trophies unlocked within two months. Using the PS4's Media Player feature to play the game with music from the films really takes it to another level.

Yeah more objectives would be nice. I like the focus on both fighting other monsters and destroying cities (or protecting them in some cases), but they definitely could have done with mixing up the level to level objectives a lot more. That and just having more levels in general. I like the idea of choosing your own path and also having that contribute to the difficulty and the monsters you face, but it's negated somewhat by the fact that you play certain stages two or three times during a single play through regardless. That, combined with the fact that you have to go through God of Destruction mode a minimum of three times per monster just to get enough parts and points to fully upgrade them (and even more times to get all the diorama stuff), really doesn't help the feeling of repetition from setting in earlier than you'd like.

But like you say, there's clearly a lot of love and respect on display in many different places. I especially like the little touches, like being able to pull Mechagodzilla '75's head off and have him keep fighting, or the combination of Godzilla, Rodan and King Ghidorah in that one Astro Monsters-esque level. Stuff that you'd only really notice and appreciate if you knew the movies. Things like that definitely made me smile. and they're the kind of things you want to see in a game like this.

And you unlocked all the trophies? That's pretty hardcore, given how much grinding the ones for fully upgrading all monsters and unlocking all diorama kits require to get. :P

I know city destruction suites Godzilla well. but we have had plenty of this. With all the advances in gaming technology, I would love to see a more adventure type game with levels & bosses, and an absolutely HUGE Toho monster cast.

For as old as the original 8 bit Nintendo game was...it's still one of my favorites to this day.
There are no more good TV Shows, only ones that haven't disappointed me yet.

I really hope we get a sequel which seems like a given considering how successful both G14 and Shin Goji have been. Sadly though if we do get a sequel it'll most likely be confined to Japan due to the poor reception the game has gotten here from critics.

I think the reason the game scored so low is they are thinking it's a fighting game. I know a few people i've spoken to that are fans of the series took the game as that. It's not it's a simulation game with fighting aspects.
