MS is offering a $50 mail-in rebate when you buy a 360 within the next week and a half. So basically, they have temporarily slashed the price of the console by $150.
On one hand I think "Oh, cool. I wonder how much it will be when I decide to get another 360 in a year or so (I plan on it once Mass Effect 2 and Crackdown 2 are out)." But then the business side of me kicks in and I think that this is an extremely desperate move. Of course this is in response to the PS3 selling so well right now, but I can only wonder how much this is going to cost them. Yeah, it's not permanent but it's a pretty awful business move to drop the price by $100 and then a further $50 (temporarily) a few weeks later. I have been saying this all along: They really look at this generation as a competition. They want to at least beat Sony which, in my opinion, is not the right way to be thinking during these times. Sure as a gamer they're offering us a good deal (assuming that the 360 doesn't break of course), but the money they must be losing because they wanted to win has to be extremely high. From getting the 1 year lead that effectively cost them billions of dollars in 360 repairs to this latest price move, it's not great business. Again, I really think they look at it as a competition between them and Sony and even Nintendo (with the whole casual market and all); while the latter two just look at it as what it is... business.
