Vintage Godzilla fanzines on the Internet Archive

Postby Joseph Goodman » Wed May 02, 2018 11:08 pm

I was surprised to find that archive.org has high quality scans of many old-school fanzines, with dozens of early issues of mags like G-Fan, Kaiju-Fan, The Monster Times, the debut issue of Fangoria (with an extensive article by Ed G.), and even an issue of the Japanese Fantasy Film Journal. If you ever were curious about the pre-internet prehistory of organized Godzilla fandom, check it out.

Whoa! That's awesome!

Also, of course I immediately checked for G-Fan issues I contributed to, and there are a few!

That is pretty cool. though I have G-Fan issues #9-current in print, , all 4 issues of Ultra-Fan/Kaiju Fan, and the G-Fan special that reprints most of DSONA#1-G-Force #7. I contributed a couple articles and several fan letters of mine were printed throughout the years. It would be nice to have some sort of concordance, as I really cant remember which issues they were in, and I don't have time to go through and look at all of them.

Also, just for the record, I have all 3 issues of Markalite (August Ragone's Magazine). This was way ahead of its time. Too bad it didn't last. Also I have 4-8 and #10 of The Kaiju Review
There are no more good TV Shows, only ones that haven't disappointed me yet.

G-Fan.com has an index of back issue content. If you do a Google search for your name plus "G-Fan" and "Godzilla," you might be able to find those issues numbers.

Reading that first issue of Fangoria...

Ed's overview of the series is pretty good for the time. I mean, some stuff is wrong and a few of the facts we know now were rumors, but nevertheless for an American magazine two decades prior to the internet revolution those few pages would have been a treasure for a Godzilla fan of the time.

- and oh my god an update on The Thief and the Cobbler during it's decades of production. How crazy is that?!

Finally, I can go back and re-read the Rex Summerall series! How effing cool is that. Thanks for the tip.

Anyone remember what issue of G-Fan from the early '00s listed every single Ultraman show, movie, and special in chronological order with a short synopsis? That was so important to young me when there was very little Ultraman available to me besides a smattering of bootleg VHS tapes!

Not an old Fanzine, but a brochure of Titra's services, with rates and formats available:
