Man, I so wanted to love his kaiju books, but I just can't. Nemesis and Maigo (haven't read Project 731) are, quite honestly, average at best. The stories are painfully predictable and plod along at a crawling pace, the first-to-third person POV switches are jarring, the characters are so stereotypical they are nearly archetypes. Island 731 was just the same. Robinson writes like he's transcribing a much better, but equally mindless, action movie. I'd chalk it up to a learning curve, but he's already written a ton of books so I guess it's just him. I might try Project 731 (all too often I go back to authors who disappoint me in the vain hope that this book will be the gold mine I've been waiting for), but I'm not very hopeful about it.

i read Pulse (Hydra vs Special Forces) and Instinct (Missing Links vs Special Forces).. both of them read like pulp action flicks, but I enjoyed them and there isn't much competition in the genre. I do think they would work better as big budget action flicks, so i think that would translate well to the comic medium. I'm game.

I think that's the key to his success: lack of competition. With kaiju being very high profile in recent movies, a niche has opened up in books. His just happens to be the biggest name out there, and lightning struck.
