Publisher: DC (original run) / Image (TPB)
Series: 6 part Miniseries plus a single issue "guide to the monsters)
Year: 1999-2000
Written by Dan Brereton. Interior Art and Covers by also by Dan Brereton.

Synopsis: A rift opens to an alien world and giant monster start coming into ours, attacking cities like San Francisco. The military decides that to fight monsters, we need to make monsters of our own. There is even a throwaway daikaiju dubbed Hatchetface...

Does that plot sound familiar? Well this series from DC comics was released in 1999 so it's probably just a coincidence. The art is incredibly unique (painted style) and its easy to draw parallels to both its influences (there seems to be a stand in for the gargantuas, mothra, etc). Image comics released this series in a single trade in 2006. It's a fun read. I think the art style might be a bit polarizing, but there were some panels that i thought could be framed.

Of all the non-Godzilla giant monster comics i've picked up over the years, i think this would be pretty close to the top of my recommendations list

Comic fans may know Brereton from 'Batman: Thrillkiller' or his creator owned series 'Nocturnals'. Godzilla fans may recognize him as the artist for CVR A of "Godzilla: Gansters and Goliaths #3"

Looks neat I might check this out.
I've got a ton of stuff on my summer reading list so it may take a bit.
